It's not just about oil. It's the fact that a narcostate led by a dictator friendly to Russia and China among others is operating right in our back yard.

I can agree there is sphere of influence aspect but the prize in this country is the oil. Without it we wouldn't be interested. It has zero to do with the drugs or the dictator and you can see that because they don't bother with those things in other places, i.e. Mexico.
