They're not mutually exclusive. You still need a good TE on the roster.

That's fine if you can replace him with someone as good or close to as good. Pass catchers, whether WR or TE has not been a strength of Howie's in the draft. Goedert and Smitty are the only ones, and Smitty was a top 10 pick. I lack confidence there.
