Posted January 5Jan 5 I am seriously done with any prospects in the secondary that haven't demonstrated in college the ability to find and play the wall and don't just run with the back and play the receiver. I. am. done. These guys are still there in later rounds but whatever the Eagles model is for DBs seems to bias athletic traits or something else. I believe at this point if they don't have this demonstrated in college the probability of doing it in the pros is almost zero.A CB that can't play the ball with the right timing in coverage is a huge liability. I accept them having less long speed. Long speed without this is Ringo. Long speed without hips and playing the ball is worthless.
January 5Jan 5 Completely agree, We need to something different.... We need to go Corner either our first or second round pick. Im tried of putting band aids on a problem. Our secondary is okay with Q, Coop, Reed and Makuba - but we need to lock down that other side for good. Mansoor Delane ( LSU ) is probably CB 1 this draft but he'll probably be gone by the time we pick, but there are a couple other guys. Jermod McCoy ( Tenessee ) might drop to us because he was out all year with a torn ACL he suffered last January. His teammate Colton Hood is also in the first round discussionthere's also Brandon Cisse ( South Carolina ), Chris Johnson ( San Diego State ) and Keith Abney ( Arizona State ) - ALL these guys are six feet tall and 190 pounds or over. A guy in the second round that I like is Keionte Scott from Miami - he's the one that had the Pick Six against Ohio State... also six feet tall.
January 6Jan 6 Definitely need something more at corner sad to think we left a player like Josh Jobe walk to keep a player like ringo/ricks around. Jobe has been starting for a year now while we know what Ringo has offered.

Gonna be on my radar going forward. Some comments say that he's primarily a slot guy. If true does that create a log jam w Coop or can this guy play outside too?

Maybe Patullo isn't the only coach that needs to go ... maybe Roy Anderson needs to be replaced as well.

Sometimes teams will draft guys that have all the physical tools, hoping they will respond to coaching and become good players at the next level. If it really just came down to coaching, there would be a lot fewer busts in the NFL and most players would eventually develop into starters --- even late-rounders. I believe that when you look at a guy like Jalen Reagor that had all the desirable physical traits to succeed, but it just never worked out with coaching from different staffs and you watch how he responded to adversity in his development --- you have to conclude greatness is a mindset players possess or don't possess. Say what you want about Moorehead, you can't convince me Keenan McCardell hasn't done a great job coaching WRs in Minnesota and even he made no strides with Reagor there. The trick is perhaps making advancements in the psychological evaluations of players and locating indicators or red flags that pertain to or hinder greatness within a player's mindset.

January 7Jan 7 Author Yeah I am kind of down on the CB development as a whole. I can't tell whether its drafting or coaching or scheme match or what. I am leaning towards Howie still trying to figure out the draft profile for Fangio DBs since its so match zone heavy with alot of coordination. They got it right with Q and Coop but they were 1st and 2nd rounders (Coop IMO should have been a low 1st). The 3rd -5th round guys just are not developing the way I feel like I see other teams do it. They need to figure it out and I don't think going athlete in later rounds works with what Fangio wants. Feels like he needs guys that have good football IQ, can tackle, like to play facing the QB but can zone match and can break and drive on ball quickly. Its hard to get everything in a later round guy so I don't think top end speed is the most important if you have to start giving up traits. Short-area quickness and Football IQ and fundamentals can take them along way with ideally a bit of length.Edit: And I am not opposed to them spending a 2nd or even another 1st if its BPA and a corner in next draft.

But that extended through multiple coaching staffs. All in all, we've had pretty good CB play throughout the Sirianni era --- even if it was with vets. In 2022, we had Dennard Wilson who seemed to get the most out of Slay and Bradberry. After being overlooked in the hiring process to replace Gannon as DC, he parted ways with the team. Then we had D.K. McDonald for 2023 and then he was replaced after Fangio was hired by Christian Parker and Roy Anderson. Slay had a bounce back season last year and Mitchell and DeJean both impressed as rookies. Rodgers performed very well as a reserve. This season, neither Mitchell nor DeJean has regressed. After a rocky start, Jackson seemed to get better and better which is really uncommon for a 9 year vet. 23 year old Ringo still struggles with consistency and that's a little disappointing and Bennett has had some setbacks since his arrival and hasn't impressed. Overall, I think Parker and Anderson have done a terrific job. The starters are playing well. I really don't care how the players get here or if they are young or old. As long as the starters are performing well, that is the main thing. Developing prospects is important, but that usually requires patience. We should still have Ringo and Bennett under contract through next season. Hopefully we'll see improvement and one of them can win a starting role. Both will be entering a contract year, so the competition should be good. We'll have to wait and see if anybody is added to the competition. We do have Mac McWilliams too.
January 9Jan 9 Author I kinda think Jackson isn't playing that much better. The biggest difference I see is some help he gets a certain times and a much improved pass rush overall making the coverage look better.Hope I am wrong and I hope it shows up in playoffs. Thankfully there are not any killer duo WRs the Eagles have to go through in the NFC which helps a lot. I agree the starters are in good shape. My reason for starting this thread was how clearly awful their entire roster of backups is. They have no depth. They need to fix that in offseason its too much risk. JMO.
