January 30Jan 30 I think this likely explains why we got all the withdraws. Notice the reports that for Daboll and McDaniels, they were willing to offer full control, but not for everyone...I think the 'not for everyone' was saying that they wanted to try a new collaborative model that would help fight off losing everyone every year. That probably also fueled the candidacy withdrawal rate.

January 30Jan 30 The funny think about all of this is fundamentally they are "fixing things to a modern offense" which is going back to a WCO offense. ;)A much evolved WCO but still a WCO. We should hopefully see not just a better quick passing game but a resurgence of a quality screen game and all the good PA and QB boots etc.
January 30Jan 30 I'll never understand why people think a first time play caller is a good thing in this league. A good DC is going to pull their chain. I get that this guy is a rising talent, and we are taking a chance, but he has a long road ahead of him and will still be susceptible to a wily DC.Don't get me wrong, at least he's not Pachullo.

I don't know much about the guy, but I was really hoping for someone along the lines of a Kellen Moore type geniusI think it was Foles who kinda said something to the effect that the guy is a genius. The two of them played together in St. Louis with the Rams.

They're 3 for 3 on former QB's - each have coached on championship teams.
January 30Jan 30 This offensive shift will be a longterm schematic shift regardless of how long Mannion stays. I won't be surprised by coaching turnover and player turnover. The entire blocking scheme will change, timing will change, the actual play calling verbiage will change.Even draft philosophy for player fit will change. You don't do this unless its a strategic multi-year adoption. It's why they got Mannion young and why they grabbed Grizzard too. I expect them to start populating the OC staff this year and next with more young names with this scheme in mind.

Coaching salaries, bonuses, and contracts are not part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)

Same with this inexperienced coach with zero OC experience. I'lll see you in here next year- screaming for his head after saying he was going to be great. 🤣🤡2023- Johnson- no OC experience, disaster2025- Patullo- no OC experience, disaster2026- Mannion- no OC experience- disasterInsanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results. This, by definition- is insanity. This was my very initial thought about this hire given the experience with Johnson and Patullo and I also had hoped for someone with playcalling experience. I have warmed up to the idea a little bit after seeing that he's had significant exposure to the McVay/Shanahan offense both directly and indirectly as a backup QB and as an assistant coach. There is certainly some upside with this move.Definitely a boom or bust type of hire though that can easily go poorly if the lack of experience rears it's ugly head in meaningful late season or postseason play against a seasoned DC.I can't help but think this was a bit of a consolation prize with how rapidly our earlier reported interview candidates were being hired left and right. Zac Robinson who ended up taking the Buccaneers job would have fit a similar bill in terms of his background, but at least called plays for 2 years for the Falcons. He would have been a reasonable option if he had interest.
January 31Jan 31 Another thing I find intriguing is this: There is not a single QB in the league right now running the Shanahan style offense with the athletic profile / running ability of Jalen Hurts. It will be interesting to see how the marry it and what funky things they can do on boots etc with this running ability.Shanahan offense is WCO at its foundation. Steve Young is a good athletic profile though doesnt have Hurt's size but comparable speed etc.Trey Lance and Robert Griffon both played in it to limited success but I would argue neither of them is the passer / QB leader that Hurts has become.Should be fun to watch. I am just happy to see good promising change to get excited about. I was dreading watching more of the same next year.

If things go badly for the inexperienced OC calling plays like I expect it to, now they have a backup plan in Grizzard. In 2023 and 2025 they KNEW they could do nothing about it their **** offenses. Now, this time- they at least have a plan of how to stop it. Grizzard is the key here.

January 31Jan 31 12 hours ago, NOTW said:Howie and Lurie are not messing around: two OC candidates hired to help fix the offense and especially pass offense. There's no way - regardless of what you think of Hurts - that they shouldn't have had a much better passing game and overall offense last year. They have a roster full of star players. They had an EASY path to repeat the way the NFL was this year and they blew it.And you now have 2 guys with outside, fresh ideas. If this works out and Siri keeps winning as HC, and Mannion gets hired elsewhere you can keep Grizzard as OC. If they do fire Nick at some point, Mannion could become HC and Grizzard OC. Not saying any of that will happen, but I'm guessing Howie likes having the options available to him. Plus other candidates they interviewed they will remember in future years.the biggest issue seems to be keeping those "star" players engaged. I know the system doesn't work and the schemes were horrible, not just last year but also in 2023 when we had that epic collapse. A lot of this has to be the players quitting on the team. How do you win 10 games straight then lose 7 of the next 8, unless the players just don't have their heads in the game?
January 31Jan 31 I’ve been saying for a while that they need to bring in 2 guys so I couldn’t be happier that they did. They couldn’t go into the season with an inexperienced Mannion running the show. That’s been a disaster 2 out of the past 3 seasons. Glad they didn’t make the same mistake and hired Grizzard as well.

Mannion has been described as a super bright offensive mind ... so there is that (we never heard anything like that about Patullo, but we did hear how Johnson was a coach "on the rise"), but the experience of designing plays and understanding how to sequence plays within a drive and game can't be understated (stole that last blurb from Mosher but it is spot on).But here we are and I will get behind this move with an open mind and cautious optimism that it has the potential to work. I can only hope his track follows more closely to Kellen Moore's - he too was a QB coach for a single year after his playing career ended before being promoted to OC in Dallas and he called plays (and was successful at it) even though he had zero previous experience doing so. And just hopeful this leads to a change in the overall offensive scheme from the boring, predictable offense we've seen under Sirianni, and that Mannion isn't forced to scrap the playbook and run Nick's offense (like Kellen was forced to do).
January 31Jan 31 The Mannion hiring was not inspiring I’ll be honest. Not that I thought it was a terrible hire but it wasn’t really inspiring. But bringing in Grizzard to be the pass game coordinator? That makes a lot of sense to give Mannion some experience on the offense. Because let’s be honest Sirianni is a chocolate fire guard there. So the combo may be a really good one and there’s upside there. For those saying Mannion hasn’t called plays in the NFL. That’s a completely fair point and look it hasn’t worked out for us in the recent past. But at one point McVay, Shanahan and Johnson hadn’t called plays. At some point every OC (good and bad) hadn’t called plays.

It seems like a good hire for the Eagles, but not so good for the guy looking over his shoulder.
