Agreed. But they did trade for Howell last year as well so there is precedent for doing so. To me the strangest part is taking on a $4M cap hit for a QB3 ... that is an awful lot for a team looking to save/create cap space on someone who is not going to see the field (like Howell). Unless they do intend to deal McKee and bump Dalton to QB2 ... then $4M makes more sense. I'd definitely be OK going that route and then adding a QB3 in the draft to start grooming to eventually bump up to QB2.

$4M is basically nothing for an experienced vet backup QB. We had Chase Daniel at $7M/year. We signed Foles for just under that in 2017. We had Flacco signed to a $4M ($3.5M guaranteed) 1-year deal. I have no idea why people think this is in some way a big amount for a QB. The only way you are likely to find a cheaper option is have a non-1st round pick backup still playing on a rookie contract (like Howell last year and McKee this year).

Exactly.

Or....they're trading Hurts and McKee is QB1! excited

Now you have me looking up dead money hits to the cap pre-June 1 and post June 1 if Hurts is dealt! lol

It is quite a lot for a QB3 though, which is why the McKee trade is definitely a possibility.

Not if the QB2 is making just over $1M.

It's the going rate for a seasoned backup QB. If a team wants to put all its trust in a guy with 2 starts in 3 (total) years, to step in for an extended period, that's quite a risk.

Maybe you’re right.

But the Eagles seemed happy with McKee at number 2 last year and it was only after he was hurt and they felt McCord couldn’t play that they moved for Howell.

You are right - 5 million isn’t a lot as a total for QBs 2 and 3. But salary cap is tight and Eagles still need to make moves at safety and for line depth.

I think if McKee is dealt it wouldn't primarily be about the salary cap (any trade would result in $46.6K in dead money to the cap and a savings of $1.1M) ... it would be more about the draft pick(s) we would get in return to give Howie more ammo to maneuver around the draft.

Ok, so, with a bunch of new Cap Space, any ideas of what they will do with it?

Sign another FA? Sign JC to an extension? 🧐🧐

I mean if this is true (and I’m shocked they managed to free up that much with our various signings) and they are intending to trade Brown, maybe now is the time when we can easily take the dead cap.

They aren't trading brown before June 1st. They didn't free up that much space.

I don't know if he has anything left in the tank, but he was very good for that one season in Houston. I honestly don't know what happened to him after that. I'm guessing injuries but I'm too lazy to research it.

Had a good rookie year then was terrible after that. No mention of injuries, just said he struggled to keep his starting position

Camp body, probably won't make the team. I loved him in the draft and as a rookie but he has been pretty horrible since then.

Pierce has done a little kick returning in the NFL. He had a 98 yard TD return in 2023 and an 80 yard return in 2024.

He looks stoned

Dang, $4M for a 3rd string QB.

McKee needs to be moved soon. Bump Dalton up to QB2.

Sydney Brown traded!

Literally chump change… we’re paying a retired edge 4x that… well actually, we have $50m in cap hit for 4 retired players lmao.
