So anyway, yeah racism

Rhodesia, if I’m not mistaken, was one of the most racist places on Earth.  Not sure if I’d get too excited about that as an example.

It’s a relative question, isn’t it? Rhodesia was pretty similar to the US of the same time period — at least in the 60’s. It was less racist than South Africa and certainly less racist than the majority of non-white controlled countries of the time.

Segregation was common in urban areas and such, but suffrage was income based not race based. It’s a real shame Mugabe came along. They could have had a developed nation which certainly would have evolved its social practices without the African Nationalist and anti-colonial movements. Instead the whites were chased out and the nation starved.

Yes, a country named after Cecil Rhodes was for racial equality.  Smh...

For racial equality? No. But less racist than it’s neighbors (again, like South Africa) or most of the world at large? Certainly.

Who cares who it was named after? Rhodes helped to colonize it long before the nation was formed and gained independence.

Look at the actual laws. Blacks were not disenfranchised. That’s just a legal fact of the country. Was it a racial utopia? Of course not. There were many policies that were racist, but no more so than some contemporary western countries.

Can't we just bump the Fixing Racial Tensions thread?

No, it’s as dead as the eagles OL.
