Greenard begins camp on PUP list, but Roseman says it's ‘not a long-term injury'

The Eagles signed Greenard in April.

Jonathan Greenard, the Eagles' $100 million free agent edge rusher, will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list after suffering a pec strain, the team announced Wednesday in advance of the first practice of the summer.

Greenard suffered the injury during an offseason weight-lifting session, the Eagles said. General manager Howie Roseman said the team is not concerned about the injury.

"We want to be smart with all our guys and get them ready but at the same time acknowledge the process to make sure that they are 100 percent when they come back,” Roseman said before practice Wednesday. "This is not a long-term injury. This is nothing we’re concerned about. But when we can, we're going to make sure that we take care of our guys and put them in the best position to have a great year.”

Roseman did not give a timeline for Greenard to return to practice but said he’s not concerned with him missing the start of the season.

"One of the things that we know about Greenard is he’s going to be ready to play,” Roseman said. "Training camp is so important, practice is so important, but when you have a guy like that who prepares the way he does and has the experience in the NFL the way he does, you know he’s going to be ready to play when we start the season.”

The Eagles signed the 29-year-old Greenard in April to a four-year contract that included a $23.3 million signing bonus. Greenard had 38.0 sacks in six years with the Vikings and made the Pro Bowl in 2024, the second of his two consecutive 12-sack seasons.

Greenard’s annual average of $24.5 million makes him the 12th-highest-paid edge rusher in the NFL and the sixth-highest-paid Eagle.

Greenard is expected to be the centerpiece of the Eagles’ pass rush, which generated just 42 sacks last year and hasn’t been above 43 since the record-setting 70-sack season in 2022. A healthy Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt and Greenard are expected to give the Eagles a robust rotation of pass rushers.

Greenard, the Texans’ third-round pick in 2020, had 12½ sacks with the Texans in 2023 and 12 with the Vikings in 2024 before dropping to three sacks in 12 games last year. He missed five games with shoulder injuries last year and underwent shoulder surgery after the season.
