Carson Wentz needs to be benched among the knee-jerk reactions after Eagles Week 2 loss to the Rams

The Philadelphia Eagles fell to 0-2 on the young NFL season, after a disappointing 37-19 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at Lincoln Financial Field.

Philadelphia is a temperamental city when things are going well so you can only imagine the disbelief and hysteria growing around the Eagles’ second straight disastrous performance.

Eagles fans want change and they want it as soon as things seem bleek, so after the heartbreaking loss at home, there’s plenty of hate and hot takes floating around the city. We break down the knee-jerk reaction to the Eagles’ latest loss.

Carson Wentz needs to be benched

Wentz was bad on Sunday and he had his moments, and even as he struggled to make plays, the Eagles franchise quarterback had the Birds down five and driving towards the end zone with all momentum.

With the Eagles sitting just outside the 20, Wentz rolled to his left off play-action, looked off his first read, and tried to fire a dart to JJ Arcega-Whiteside running a post route into the end zone. Rams cornerback Darious Williams made an amazing play and intercepted the pass, ending the drive and the Eagles chances.

Wentz has played bad, but does that mean the 27-year-old should be benched in favor of Jalen Hurts? Of course not.

That’ll be the talk of Philadelphia this week despite Hurts not proving anything in college or in the NFL that warrants him getting the starting quarterback nod.

Frank Reich made Doug Pederson

Pederson has earned the benefit of the doubt with three straight playoff appearances but he must do more to reel Carson Wentz while putting him in better position to be successful on a weekly basis.

Rams coach Sean McVay had scripted a game plan for quarterback Jared Goff, getting him outside the pocket early on and putting him in a position to be successful against the Eagles aggressive pass rush. Pederson has yet to play to Wentz’s strengths and that’s a concern.

"I thought there were some good plays there. Some good decisions,” Pederson said when asked to assess Wentz. "He did a nice job handling the run game with some of the checks that we had going on and got us in and out of some throws from the standpoint of bad defenses into good, positive plays.

"So he handled the game that way.”

Fair or not, Pederson will always be linked to Reich, who was the Eagles offensive coordinator during the 2017 Super Bowls season.

During the 2017 season, the Eagles offense scored 25 or more points in 12 of their 17 games.

With Reich as the offensive coordinator, Carson Wentz was on his way to being the MVP of the NFL and he hasn’t played that way since. That’s on Pederson.

JJ Arcega-Whiteside is a bust

Eagles fans get more and more irate with every DK Metcalf touchdown reception over Stephon Gilmore. Metcalf almost had as many TD catches over the first two games of the 2020 season that Arcega-Whiteside has in his brief two-year career. On the interception that broke the Eagles back, Arcega-Whiteside didn’t put up a fight for the ball, something that made him a second-round pick.

We’re unsure of the former Stanford star is a bust, but his selection definitely was a mistake.

Howie Roseman ruined the Eagles

Roseman put this team together and the Eagles push ahead with pending salary cap issues, it’ll be on the general manager to assess just how good this team really is. Roseman doesn’t value the linebacker position, while his highest-paid players at other positions are aging and not producing at the same rate.

Roseman can point to the Eagles pending youth movement, but a lot of those younger players aren’t panning out and that’s going to fall back on Roseman. Arcega-Whiteside, Derek Barnett, and a few others leave room for Roseman to face criticism.

Wentz wouldn’t have some of the issues he’s been dealing with if Roseman had drafted Terry McLaurin or Metcalf, all drafted after Arcega-Whiteside.

With the Eagles sitting at 0-2, the conversation about Roseman outside of cap numbers or salaries will grow increasingly more negative.

Hard to argue with some of those knee jerk reactions...

And the whole Wentz being benched thing... That was a problem brought about the second Howie drafted Hurts.
