if they only needed a backup...why draft someone so high? I mean they could have signed Andy Dalton  or similar....who would not have been a '"threat" to Wentz..typically the backup QB is often the experienced Veteran..who is more game ready to come in, in case something happens to the starter...

Because they need the cap space? And a good back up isn't going to be cheap? Foles wasn't. A lot of the better back ups aren't cheap. So why not draft a guy who's cheap and you have for 4 years?

The logic is solid. The fact he was chosen in the second round though is still baffling for a team that needed a lot of help on the field. I'm not big on the college football so I don't know who else was available at QB but I'm betting there were a few after the third round.

I really don't believe that I really don't. We are all entitled to our own opinions but I just don't see that they drafted Hurts to replace Wentz.

I don't think that either. I think they drafted Hurts to be a competent backup. I doubt Lurie and Roseman overlooked the fact that Foles finished both the 2017 and 2018 seasons. They also saw what happened when McCown came in for an injured Wentz. Could Hurts become Wentz' replacement? Maybe but I doubt that was the plan last April.

I believe Howie when he used the word insurance.  He wanted options.  They like Carson, but noted that 3 years in a row the backup QB finished the season and they had a backup playing in a playoff game 3 years in a row.  But I think they also wanted a potential option to replace Carson if Hurts develops and works out, and if Carson's injuries continue or his performance gets worse.  Howie just wanted options.  And if they end up not needing Hurts to replace Wentz and he's valuable, he can trade him to get some value back.  That's pretty much what he said in his response.

Going back to after Chip left, Lurie himself said he wanted a place that is always developing QBs.  They talked about having "QB University" with coaches that were former QBs and a great place to develop them and get them ready to play.  They had Bradford, signed Chase Daniel and also drafted Wentz.  Now they've graduated from a "University" to a "QB Factory."

Plenty of teams draft QBs to develop or bring in a veteran backup as insurance.  The shocking thing was taking a QB in the 2nd round, when the team was desperate to get younger and needed help on defense badly.  Taking a QB in the 4th or 5th would have been received differently.

Agreed.

Oh I'm completely with you. I actually think the logic is flawed and it was a bad pick for that very reason. But I think that's why they drafted him as a cheap back up.

I think it could be a plan now because of how bad Wentz has been. I just don't believe it was the plan when they drafted Hurts.
