I realized a few days ago that I don't have a fire extinguisher in my house, even though I've been there for several months.

I know that an ABC extinguisher covers all types of fires.  But I see some online that say things like "3A, 40-BC".  What does that mean?  How many pounds should I get?  2.5 lbs?  5 lbs?  10 lbs?

This confused me.... you don't have walls up but you have the floors in?  Do you mean the paneling or the actual finished floor?

My solution to getting up there is a telescopic ladder.  Bring it out when you need it, and if not, it folds up like a folding chair.

I have two telescoping ladders.  One that my father in law gave me (that is a bit taller).  It is light weight and a PITA to use.

I also have one of these.  Very sturdy and "easier" (once you get the hang of it and learn how to not pinch your fingers) to extend.  But it may be a tad heavy for you.   (13' ladder @ 25 lbs makes it a little inconvenient to lug around)

Thanks for your insight on the ladders @paco.  As you know I am easily confused.  I wondered why they are asking for the order for cabinets when there's no walls up yet in either unit.  Just framed.  The purple board for the bathroom is there (heavy as ish!) I'm thinking 1st trip down lets get that up.  Or not?  All the fixtures are there, but no plumber yet.  Not sure when he's coming and what he needs done or not done?  Insulation is there and I have no idea how to install that. Then we wait for whatever wall board (it won't be drywall) they give us.

I am not too worried about flooring.  It's not there yet, it's too cold to put it in so if the sink cabinet gets in and plumbed we'll just be installing the flooring up to the cabinets.

Will be getting into the beach off season to do some work soon.  Can’t even begin to tell you how overwhelming finishing this task is in the hopes I will make Mr Di proud.

Cousins next door sent me their cabinet lay out.  The plumber needs base cabinets in. He wants to try and plumb both units in a day, or a weekend.  We don’t have any walls up yet, or the insulation, or the floors.  We both have bathroom floors in though.  Owner supplying the rest.  Since my unit is not as wide, I would like to keep it as open as possible.  The finished look theme I’m aiming for is iron pipe and rope.  So instead of getting any upper cabinets I like the farmhouse iron wood shelves.  Question is, I can get the pipe fittings/brackets at a decent price, but the wood is a little much.  Will it hold up to the elements?  (Warp in the winter?). Could I buy some tile pieces to make the shelves?  The edges showing would look stupid right?  Just pondering. I need help.  And wine!   Already picked out an iron hanging wine rack that also has glasses hanging under.  Also a coffee sign with the shelve under with hooks for 6 mugs.

I think the bases that I sent off will work. Have 9 ft and I’m short of that but there’s a dreaded corner cabinet I hope works with not knowing if I’m getting a standard   Fridge or less.  Less is more in this unit.

Don’t get me started on the loft areas of these tiny cottages.  Next door is standard 8 ft. They have little kids and are trying to figure out access.  My side is 9.5ft.  I know mr Di had a vision but I just don’t know what it was!!   My solution to getting up there is a telescopic ladder.  Bring it out when you need it, and if not, it folds up like a folding chair. I picture maybe some grab bars up there in the middle with the pipe and rope railing on either side.  It maybe just storage but if you want to climb up there, there’s room for more sleeping.

I do appreciate any suggestions as I have no idea what I’m doing. If you could even read all this.  Jesus.

got enough room for one of these? check into some rolling ladders like they use in libraries. lotsa cool options and quite user friendly.

highly likely because the supply at the cabinet manufacturer is low. It's similar to why toilet paper ran out. Cabinet manufacturers aren't high volume storage.

I thought she meant just for construction.... That would make more sense.

That's nice as hell.

We only had one of those racks that hung down for the longest time.  Then when the pandemic hit I thought "hey, lets go bigger" so I ordered a set of these:

imageService?profileId=12026540&id=14844

It was a two pack and I was planning on putting the second one in.  Problem was if I put it on the opposite wall, there wouldn't be enough space to get anything in,  I couldn't put it on the adjacent wall or it would block the door, and I couldn't put it on the end of the garage because the over hang they built for the garage door didn't have joists at the standard length. (And I didn't feel like ripping the ceiling open, add blocking, then buy the proper fire resistant drywall to repair the damage for a storage rack)  So I kept the mini one and gave the other one to my brother in law.   One was enough anyway to hold all the boxes out of the nursery that has been sitting there since we moved in, plus some Christmas crap

If we are here for an extended period of time, I'm going to put a proper ladder in the attic so I can get trapped up there like in Christmas vacation.

Nice thing is that the ceiling is so high in my garage that I have it all the way down (roughly 3'8") and its 7'5" from the ground.  Embiid could walk under it and not bang his head.  117 cubic feet of storage out of the way

If PA makes weed legal, I'm going to install one of those things and make it my lift to my secret pot cave away from the kids

No, but that's because I'm usually ok with being high.

I got very similar ones.  Not gonna lie they were a PITA to put up.  Work great but I did it solo for the most part.

Is that you or Don Imus peering out of your attic?

  • 1 month later...

I took a ride down to the Bay on Saturday.  I gave the lady owner a base cabinet order.  She literally digs out whatever she has in her warehouse and brings it over, holes and all. One is just drawers with one drawer  totally in disrepair.  They are mismatched as well, so they need work, and I will have to paint them.  At least all the bathroom fixtures are new.  The cousins next door went and got a hot water heater and started to install it in their loft.  We were to share a 40 gal tank between us that the owner provided, so already not liking the non communication.  Now, I'm looking for a shorty 19-20 gal that can go under one of the cabinets.  Can't wait for the owners to get one, they took 3 years just to remodel 1 cottage.  I need water and electric if I am to semi enjoy this free season even though it's already starting to cost me more money.

I need to know what's next.  The plumber that's coming has to use the plex tubing (the blue and red stuff).  I know he wants the base cabinet in, but this piping runs through the studs so how do I install a cabinet?   There's no wall to screw it to.  Guess I have to wait for the rough in, then be ready to insulate and put in the wall board.  The sink would also need to be somewhat set so I need a countertop ready before he comes? I don't have one of those yet.

Over the past two weeks I did a quick remodel of the guest bathroom.  Just got it "done".

DDZazPZ.jpg

Before pic.  As you can see, it had a cheap linoleum floor.  Ripped that and the luan board out.   Took out toilet and pulled back the carpet.

TnnIk3n.jpg

This was the biggest pain in the ass.  Instead of routing the water line through the wall, it was coming straight out the floor.  This doesn't work for the vanity we bought.   Luckily my father in law is a plumber.

ZmwN586.jpg

I would like to never do that again.

Now I had to repair the floor we cut out.  Since its under the vanity and going to be covered in cement board and tile, I clamped and screwed some particle board in underneath to rest it on and screw the old sub floor back in.

4UHtah6.jpg

RasCZzw.jpg

Needed to repair the drywall where we did the plumbing AND where we ripped out the old backsplash

fQXRyc1.jpg

E9og8Na.jpg

After the drywall was fixed, we painted.  Then I put in 1/2 cement board to tile on. (1/4 for the threshold)  I went a little overboard on this step.  I first laid down mortar and then put the cement board on on top before I screwed it in with cement board screws.

Then my father in law came over, put the valves in for the vanity and put in the p trap.  Then I put in the baseboard molding, installed the toilet and now I can relax for the evening.   I think.

All that's left is:

Fix leak in P trap
Fix a grout spot that primer got on
Fix the carpet where it meets the threshold
Hang some shelves once they arrive
Buy and install backsplash for the vanity

Paco, you really are getting good at this! Looks nice.

My son and I went down to the bay cottage.  We got some insulation up, and 2 walls.  I will have to mud/tape that seam. I've never done it before but I should be able to myself.    One of his  buddies came down as well, so we loaded up some cabinets and brought them back so I/we can work on them here.  So much easier having running water!  Getting a hot water heater dropped off today.  It's 20 gal and will be installed inside one of the cabinets.  Still working with next door figuring out a plumber.  We so miss ours!  We would be so much closer to being ready.  I also put Mr. Di's brother on notice (he's 2 weeks out).  He's never been down, and he may help me out with a countertop.  He also knows some plumbing.  Hope to use him when it's time for put the fixtures on.  My brother the electrician will be available soon for additional help.
