May 28, 20214 yr Our AC unit died, so I decided to replace the furnace while we were at it. Good thing we did because the heat exchanger was cracked so it's been leaking carbon monoxide into our house every time it runs in the winter. So now we need to replace our carbon monoxide monitor since it obviously isn't working... Then when they pulled the furnace out they found that my duct work is all full of mold from the whole house humidifier. So today I'm calling to schedule someone to clean our ducts and seal in the mold. Isn't owning a house great?!?!

I did get a $500 rebate from PPL and $300 from UGI for getting energy efficient ones. Mine were both almost 20 years old.

My townhouse that I sold had the furnace located in the basement in such a way that it couldn't get the necessary airflow (i think?) for the higher efficiency units, so I just went with a pretty standard unit efficiency (maybe 80%? possibly higher?). Similarly I went with like a modest 14 EER single-stage condensing unit. On BOTH, the payback for going with the higher efficiency was like 7 years or so and I knew I would only be in the house about 5 tops (did not expect to move to MN after 2 though ). All I originally had was the furnace, so after replacing that, 100% brand new was: the condensing unit, the pad it sat on, the DX coil installed above the furnace, the condensate pump to get the water up and over the walls (the furnace was in a mechanical closet in the center of the basement, against the neighboring townhomes wall as opposed to the exterior wall), the electrical breaker in the panel, the electrical runs between the condensing unit and inside, the refrigerant between the ACCU and the DX coil, and the condensate drain tubing over to where there was a whole/sump pump already in the basement... everything purchased, installed, and old removed was like $5,000.
May 28, 20214 yr I may need to do work on my hvac unit in my new home. The heat worked fine, but the AC seems weak, it's cold but not a lot of air seems to come out of the vents. Gonna try cleaning the ac coil thingy. I do have 3 zones and there is a mechanism to control where the air goes depending on what zone is calling for it (no idea what it's called). I was thinking maybe that's not working right and maybe blocking some of the airflow? Any other ideas of things I could check myself before getting a pro in?

YES, simple thing is replace the screens when the air flow seems real low. That's the first thing I check. Then i make sure someone hasn't thrown a copy of WW84 back there. Last time i looked there like 20 copies blocking the flow.

I also replace the filter very regularly. Also the furnace was inspected just a few months ago.

If I remember correctly, the fan motor is supposed to run at a higher speed when the AC is on vs the heat. Is that correct? I was thinking maybe there could be a problem there.

I was thinking maybe there could be a problem there. I don't have much experience with residential units, but I'd say the vast majority are single-speed fans and only newer installations within the past 5ish years or so where the Owner requested it (or the contractor up-sold to make more money) would have a multi-speed fan. But typically when running refrigerant for cooling you want no less than 75% of your maximum airflow to be blowing across the coil. Similar to the single-speed fans that are the vast majority, any non-southern region will likely only have a single-stage condensing unit so the fan is likely going on high when you are mechanically cooling. If you have a 2-speed fan and the load isn't that heavy (aka, maybe its like 75 outside but humid enough that you are running the A/C as opposed to opening windows, the cooling coil cna be active with the fan on low speed which wont provide as much cooling to the space, but will provide greater dehumidification since the slower fan speed results in the air being in contact with the refrigerant coil for a greater period of time, allowing more condensation to be removed from the air.
May 29, 20214 yr Got the patio "done" today. Added 180sf to the existing 160sf. Put together my Blackstone too today. Tons of room for the grills and people. Still have some things I want to do to it in the next month or so; lights, posts, tiki torches, tv mount and I got a quoit set to dig in in the back yard.

Did you use sand or polymer to seal the joints? Polymer while more expensive is well worth it. Also grit or sand as the laying base? Grit was always our go to when laying hardscape.

Grit was always our go to when laying hardscape. Sand for the base, and, since I had enough left over, I used that in the joints as well. I had planned on using polymer at first, but I figured I already had the sand, no sense in buying something else. Even though I've only got about $400 in this thing
