TOisStillaPuss? Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 I've always been bothered by the Dallas Goedert pick. In my mind, picking a player "just" to take them away from your rival is a stupid approach to drafting. It's such an ex-girlfriend, jealous, sophomoric approach. I believe the proper approach to take is to scoff at your rivals and draft the player that makes your team better, not draft a player just to keep your rival from getting them. If you're running your franchise correctly, your rivals aren't even worth the energy. Do you think the Patriots give two s****s about who the Dolphins or Jets or Bills are drafting? Do you think the Pats would ever draft a player for the purpose of keeping that player away from one of their division rivals? F*** no!! The argument could be made (at the time) that Goedert really, really wasn't a player we needed to take. We had an above average TE corp already (Ertz and Burton) and there were other players available at other positions of need. When we picked him, a lot of the narrative was about "screwing the Cowboys," and I was sooo annoyed with that. Especially because we traded up for him. It looked like our main motivation truly was to stick it to Dallas. ...I hated it. It was Eagles fans playing right into the "little brother" role that Philly has been dwelling in for 40+ years: the Cowboys are the team we look up to and aspire to be. Now, Eagles fans would never admit this. They'd **** and moan about how "bad" the Cowboys "suck" and how "Dallas gets all the breaks!" all the while knowing, in the back of their minds, that the Eagles were going to go 4-12 while the Cowboys were going to win yet another Super Bowl (I'm alluding to the mid-90s here, in case you didn't pick up on that). But, that mentality has carried over to the modern era (to some extent) and the idea of "screwing the Cowboys" by drafting a player that Dallas coveted was a big middle finger to our "older brother" who always gets the girl, has a better job than us, makes more money, drives a faster car, etc., etc., etc. Even though we didn't want to admit it, actions speak louder than words: drafting a player just to keep him away from a rival is a huge sign of how much we envied what the Cowboys had: Rings, wins, HOFers, on and on... Well, yesterday this all got flipped on its head and I just HOWLED with laughter. When I look at the Cowboys' roster, the thing they need the LEAST is an offensive weapon. Their secondary is deteriorating, their O-line is getting older, their QB is middling, they don't have a TE... There are so many needs that come before a 3rd WR, and yet, they drafted the player WE wanted, SOLELY to keep him away from us. Once again, I HOWL with laughter. The Cowboys, who are still riding the coattails of mid-90's success, last won a SB in 1995. Since then they have 4 playoff wins. F-O-U-R. That's 4 wins in 25 years. We have four playoff wins in the last 3 years, including a super bowl. Even though we traded up for Goedert and he filled a slight need (because of the loss of Brent Celek that offseason), I still view it as a "screw the Cowboys" pick more than a strategic "build our team" pick... and even though I really like Goedert as a player, it still bothers me. The CeeDee Lamb pick, as I see it, was Goedert all over again but flipped and magnified x10. Remember that image of Jerry Jones sitting in his white-couched, pearline room. A greasy oil mogul in hysterics, laughing in the face of the the Eagles; a plastic grin on his face betraying reality and betraying his true inner thoughts: Dallas is Philadelphia's little brother. Jerrah is terrified of us; his legacy soon to be tarnished by 30+ years of inept management, below-average success and zero Super Bowl wins in his later years. "Go to sleep now, little brother. It will all be over soon." 2
The Norseman Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 Even if it was just to screw Dallas Goedert was taken in the 2nd round, not the first. That being said, I think there were three good reasons to draft him when we did: 1.) Gave us another good offensive weapon and back filled Celek 2.) Hedged our bet on Ertz in case he got injured or demanded too much money at a later date (may still happen) 3.) Kept Goedert OUT of Dallas hands....Witten had just retired and we wanted them to have that hole in their offense I think the only argument the Cowboys can make in taking Lamb is that they took the best player available on their board....which is a pretty good argument in my book.
EagleJoe8 Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 Burton had also moved on to Chicago. We lost both Celek and Burton that off season.
DeathByEagle Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 Really thought Eagles picked Dallas Goedert in spite for the Cowboys? LOL Even funnier if you think Dallas picked Lamb to piss off the Eagles. They took the Best player. Good for them, and smart move. In 2 years when Coop and, or Gallup is gone they will be thrilled to still have a cheap stud WR for 3 more years. Hate Jones but said it best. (paraphrasing of course)We didnt have Lamb avail to us in any mock draft and we were not expecting to take a WR. but when a young man with his talent falls to you we knew you dont pass it up. 1
KOJO Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 Dallas didn't take Lamb just to spite the Eagles. He was there, they had a need to replace Cobb, & they thought it was important to get their guy as many weapons as possible. The fact that the Eagles needed him was just icing on the cake. That offense is going to be extremely potent. Dak gets a lot of hate around here but there are FAR worse QBs in this league than him. The Clapper isn't there anymore either. Funny how people are trying to soothe themselves about this by saying the Cowboys secondary stinks while ignoring the fact that the Eagles have nobody who can even sniff covering their receivers outside of old man Slay.

Lets not jump off the deep end here. Slay is 29. The point is we are trying to make our secondary better (Slay,NRC) while the Cowgirls just let their best DB walk out the door.
Uscg-green Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 Dallas was taking him anyway. Scewing us was just a bonus.
