Major September Cancellations Announced- Effect on NFL?

Im posting this here as it's the most highly viewed area and it could be a harbinger of things to come...

I just got a notification that TriFesta in Louisville,Kentucky has been canceled.  This is 3 separate music and art festivals over 3 weekend's in September.  Hometown Rising, Burbon and Beyond, and Louder Than Life.  Each of these festivals brings 50k+ people per day.

They cited local and federal government in the decision.  Which tells me that Kentucky,  or/and the government shut them down due to large crowds.

My fear is that these are currently the furthest out mass gatherings to be canceled, and what that might mean for MLB/NFL....

Seems too soon for the government to intervene but who knows. Can't predict anyone's reactions to this.

You guys are crazy if you think the NFL wont find a way to have this season, covid or not.

this is the same league that just stupidly added another playoff spot solely for the purpose of making more money.

As much as I would love for the NFL season to not be affected, I'd rather it be cancelled than to put the players, their families, team employees and their families and all of the fans, in jeopardy.

Of course, the hope is that this thing will be under control by then, but if there's any chance that anyone could be infected and suffer serious consequences (either personally or to others), then I can live with either cancellation or abbreviation of the season.

I really don't know.  Maybe without fans in attendance?  What about states that are still locked down at a state level?  California, New York, Florida?  Those 3 states have how many teams? I have no doubt the nfl will try anything they can,  but at what point might they become so handcuffed, they suspend or cancel games?

The Los Angeles mayor recently said he doesnt see sporting events coming back until NEXT YEAR!!

I really wouldn't doubt that happening.

Different parts of the country will open up at different times. Those states that can open, will be open at different levels; ie. some places might be completely open, allowing practices and games with fans allowed to gather. Others may be partially open, allowing football activities but no fans. Even others may not allow any football activities to take place without violating distancing guidelines... It's going to be an interesting season.

California has the Rams, 49ers and Chargers. New York has the Bills and Florida has the Bucs, Dolphins and Jaguars.

Did I miss any? That was just off the top of my head.

Seattle is also likely in that group with how bad its been in Washington state.

This really doesn't surprise me. Even without fans, there are enough people present to allow for possible spreading unless you're testing people prior to, and then isolating them and their families for the duration of the season. This thing is a nightmare, and it's likely to only get worse before it gets better.

I'd include New Jersey as well so Giants and Jets.

i already paid my tickets in full. Im sure the Lurie and the NFL does not want to lose my money, the other hundreds of thousands of season ticket holders money, And esp the TV money which is the big money maker. They will find a way to play.

Now all college sports I could see getting the axe.

I am sure @Wallyhorse and the local law makers are already on it.

They’ll most likely be no fans in attendance for some of the games. If there will be fans attending it will be in warm weather and the attendance will probably be spread out.
Maybe those who’ve already had the virus will be allowed to attend. You just dunno.
One thing I think is going to happen is PPV broadcasts to try and bring in revenue if there is no attendance.

I opt for the payment plan.  They took my first payment and that's it.....

This is very big because the Kentucky Derby was already postponed until Sept. 5.  It does not bode well for THAT event to be held, at least with fans in attendance.

How would that work for player contracts? Paid same as usual regardless of a shutdown?

😅😅🤣🤣😂😂

Would not surprise me if the NFL and college football both have to delay their seasons until January, especially if California is not allowed to have ANY sporting events until then.  This is a big reason why College Football is already likely to be delayed until at least January and the NFL may be forced to follow suit with possibly the 2021-'22 season delayed until November and then even 2022-'23 delayed until October and everything not returning to normal until 2023-'24. That's how much this virus may mess with the NFL.

The Kentucky Derby is kind of a special case because horse owners have been paying millions of dollars in stake payments for years. So even if there are no fans, they will run the race.

They do in buying horses and so forth, but the only actually nominate to the race and the rest of the Triple Crown in January of their three year old season with a "late" nomination period in March.  The Derby is NOT a Futurity the way some stakes are where they do make payments as yearlings and so forth.

If the Triple Crown races have to be canceled, there are a lot of us involved in Horse Racing who would want to see the Triple Crown revamped and changed to being for four year olds on a permanent basis.  It would probably be in the long-term best interests of the sport to do that as it would force changes for the better in the way horses are bred knowing horses have to be able to race at four and more likely as five year olds rather than rushed off to the breeding shed at three.
