So power companies are idiots for not preparing but regular people are just helpless victims?

Probably the best thread on the subject. Unsurprisingly, the disaster wasn't the fault of a state senator's trip to Mexico, but the sheer incompetence of the Biden administration:

Oof.

The document, from the DoE not the EPA, says the opposite. I read through it myself, which clearly states that as long as they exhaust other means (such as importing power from neighboring grids) they were granted what they asked for.

This other twitter rando confirmed my reading:

I'm sure this has already been torn to shreds since I'm 3 hours behind, but I'm in the mood to dunk on you again.

the urban areas of texas have a high % of renters...more than 50% in houston, dallas, austin, irving, & killeen.  how the hell are those people getting wood burning stoves?

I think the intelligent Trump supporter is like the Loch Ness monster. People claim one exists but reports have never really been confirmed.

Imagine being so stupid and wrong, consistently, every single time, about literally everything.

The biggest right wing dumbsh** lying ass bullshittery indicator is when you see someone say "nobody is talking about it". There's a reason not a single serious person is repeating the idiocy in this thread. And it's a really really really really really really easy to think of reason. Instead, you immediately dive face first into factually incorrect nonsense. Again. And again. And again.

Texas runs on its own power grid separate from the rest of the country—and state leaders designed this specifically to avoid federal regulation. This meant that Texas "was limited in its ability to import energy from neighboring states,” offered Oliver, and it led the power provider Ercot to struggle to meet surging demands. The state of Texas also left it to the energy companies to decide whether or not to winterize their facilities to protect themselves against storms.

They chose not to be part of the national grid, which hobbled them.

The chose not to winterize, because it cost too much for something that never happens, at least, not since 2011 when it happened.

when you look at the grid, to me it looks like they left buffer zones on the panhandle and the east/west sides where ERCOT wasn't the grid. my bet there is that they wanted to integrate with other grids THERE, within the state of Texas, where it would STILL be separate from Federal oversight but be able to tap in to other grids if needed.

there were a couple problems with this as I understand it (I'm not an expert, but I have read a lot).

1. the neighboring grids were having their own issues during the freeze, so they didn't have a lot of excess to tie into
2. the power is transmitted on different frequencies, requiring converter stations or whatever

but I do think the outline of the grid was specifically designed to try and be able to tap into neighboring grids without exposing the state to the evils of regulatory oversight.

What do Kz and Ted Cruz have in common? They're both cowards.

It’s been just a few days since Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) was shamed into returning from his tone-deaf trip to Cancun during a once-in-a-generation disaster that’s killed dozens of people in his home state—but he’d really appreciate it if everyone just gave him a break already. In an appearance on the conservative Ruthless podcast, Cruz got particularly salty about his Houston neighbors, who he appears to believe leaked texts from his wife about the planned trip. "Heidi is pretty pissed about that,” said Cruz when asked about the texts, which showed her complaining about her "freezing” home and trying to get others to flee the city with them. Cruz appeared to lay the blame for the leaks on his Democrat-supporting neighbors, saying the leak was a sign of "how ridiculously politicized and nasty” politics has become in the nation and, more specifically, on his street. "Here’s a suggestion, just don’t be a-holes,” said the senator. "Treat each other as human beings, have some degree, some modicum of respect.” Cruz also said that those getting angry about the trip "need to laugh a little bit—you know, loosen up.”

yeah c'mon you bunch of aholes. learn to laugh a little when dozens get killed in a horrific natural disaster.

Shame Ted doesn't take his own advice. He's about as big as an a-hole gets.

There was an interesting quote from Trump that someone posted he talked about the SC justices were the worst "employees he's ever had". Very telling. Barr and the justice department were nothing more than employees expected to carry out his will.
