The backup ng generator is still on my zombie apocalypse bunker to do list

Well, they better start preparing, because these kinds of weather events are only going to become more frequent.

Settle down Al Gore

Suffer for days without power to own the libs

I wonder if all the libs moving from Cali to Texas feel the same way

A lot of states have subsidies for rechargable electric batteries like Tesla/solar panels as long as they can pull from them when there are no outages/weather concerns. Probably the route I'm going.

You guys talk about the Texas mayor who told his residents seeking heat and electricity to "stop asking for handouts"?

oh yeah, he's upset that people got the feels over his comments even if they were insensitive and low.

Ive wondered if a residential wind turbine could be enough to power a tesla wall

Its politically dumb but hes not wrong.

Hurricane Sandy? Well I mean, that was like...October. I was stuck in Lower Manhattan during that. And yeah, bodegas were open via candlelight. Bars were selling cans out of coolers. I was living off of canned beans and tuna. Cell phones and ATMs weren't working.  The east river was a block away from my apartment rather than 6 blocks away like it's supposed to be. It was the glory days.

But I wasn't freezing, and buried in snow. That's for sure.

you really are cavalier when it comes to others in times of crisis. but i guess you can be when you have the mutant power of endless warmth.

I think it should work well enough as long as you have a relatively open spot that gets sufficient wind speed. I also think wind turbines have more maintenance too. I looked into it briefly but my property is too sheltered by tree coverage so stopped pretty quick.

All the hype regarding these power walls crack me up. People can barely stand their iphone's diminished battery charging capacity after two years, but they're all gung ho to fill up an entire wall in their garages with thousands of old "reconditioned" cells.

Fair point. Especially since i dont see an electric vehicle in my future.

more about powering the house which is why i always assumed an ng backup made the most sense

Froze our asses off plenty of nights during Sandy with a toddler in the house.

spent my days running to find gas to keep the generator going. Ran so much i had to do an oil change on it.

yes people should be able to suck it up for a while and make due.

Would have to be appropriately sized, but you're also looking at some conversion losses if you're using it primarily as part of a system to power your home with a generator. I think it's one of the things that sounds good in theory, but in practice, ends up being a bit underwhelming. Could be useful if you want to shut off the generator at night and run off the wall for a few hours to avoid the noise from the generator.

Meh my brother loses power he can run his house for days with his. Might lose juice eventually sure but it's not like a whole house generator is exactly small or inexpensive alternative. We'll see.

lolwut? He runs his entire house for days without a generator?

It's linked to his solar panels which recharge it. And during outages he limits his power usage somewhat. And he has a pretty small energy efficient house. But yeah he has gone over 48 hours with it before. No idea how long it would last if pushed, hasn't come to that.

Plus his commie state subsidized a big portion of the thing.

Ok that partially explains it. In that case, the powerwall just acts as a buffer to sustain him from dusk til dawn. So if he's careful about managing it during those dark hours, and allowing for enough excess to recharge it during the day, then yeah I can see it.

I just checked my usage and we currently are averaging 26kWh per day for the last 30 days. A powerwall is rated at 14kWh. There are days in the summer where we get dinged for peak usage because we hit 60+. Everyone's gonna have different usage profiles obviously, so he's probably good at load shedding by turning off everything but a fridge, cooks on a propane grill instead of stove, uses fans instead of A/C in the summer, etc.
