Not sure why AK and HI wouldn't both be entitled to two Senators, but a big problem to me is representation being capped at 435 for almost 100 years now. This wouldn't solve the issue of DC but it has contributed to the outsized power of small states.

mostly because they're so damn small. the purpose of the Senate is to ensure that populous states cannot dominate the less populous states. which is a reasonable goal. but when you have so many low population states, now you have a situation where those low population states wield immense political power.

while some counterbalancing of the tyranny of the majority is wise, going as far as the Senate has gone has yielded an age where the minority has swallowed the majority.

I think there is merit in increasing the size of the house, but for me messing with the senate is a no go.

to me anymore it’s not so much a protection against big states versus small states as it is a regionalization.  The mountain states tend to swing more libertarian, so you get a decent balance there.

imo our current troubles aren’t in representation so much as they are political parties consolidating power.

So don’t make them pay taxes.  Problem solved

Yeah, right.

Because no one would try to move from Arlington or Bethesda into the district...

It should be the same as Puerto Rico.  No  income tax

Alaska and Hawaii are just difficult to me because they're not easily folded into other states to make a reasonable region for representation in the Senate.

Another approach might be to break up big states like CA and maybe even TX into smaller states. You could probably do that in a way where 2 democrat senators become 3 democrat and 1 republican in California, and the reverse for Texas.

The main problem IMHO is with how much power these low population mountain states wield in the Senate. It's way out of whack.

A lot of Puerto Ricans pay federal income taxes.  And of course, they also pay Puerto Rican taxes.  If DC were somehow exempt from federal income taxes, it would be a completely different set up than Puerto Rico.  It also has the problem mentioned above.  People would flock there in a way that they wouldn't to Puerto Rico, since it's an island with very big water around it.

Funny story, I used to party in Georgetown some with this girl who was a reporter at the Washington Post.  We would try to get a cab at 2 a.m. and as soon as I said the address and then NE the cab drivers would say no, they weren't driving us there.  LOL.  The Cab drivers were all afraid they were going to end up in the ghetto

The apartment was only a few blocks behind the Capitol, but the neighborhood changes pretty quick.

I did not expect a reply, lol.

She cute, though...

D.C. doesn't need to be made into a state. Through retrocession, the land should be given back to Maryland, just as the Virginia portion was given back to Virginia in 1847.
