The entire Republican argument against DC statehood can be summed up as 'it's not white enough.' Prove me wrong.

The Constitution provides for the creation of a "Federal District," as distinct from a state or territory. It places a maximum limit on the area of said District but does not set a minimum.

And for good reason. DC is the gov and nothing else

Youre wrong. There.

Republicans fear Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico from becoming States. It will happen probably in the next 10 years thanks to the prior President.

DC gets about 800 million a year from the federal government to help get the metro running. Wonder how that will sort out because DC already has outrageous taxes.

Don’t get ahead of yourself. DC Statehood has to get past the Senate... If it does, DC will have more direct representation, with duly-elected Congressmen. But I feel the nearby VA-MD district Congressmen indirectly represent DC interests from the suburbs anyway. And there already is an elected DC Rep in the House, with a voice but no official vote... So I feel there will be little change, if any.

The biggest change will be party representation in the Senate, IMO

No we just understand its nothing but partisan bs from the left

What benefit is it that DC provides the rest of us aside from being a first strike target?

They are both negative assets consuming more than either could ever produce. They are and will forever be bottomless money pits.

Well, many of the suburban counties surrounding DC are some of the richest in the nation: Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Montgomery MD... There must be some bustling economic activity.

A lot of big national and multi-national companies are headquartered in DC. LINK  A lot of Federal contractors, although most of them have moved out to the suburbs.

And don’t forget it’s the seat of Federal government. Besides the politicians, there’s FBI, DOJ, HHS... many Federal agencies work there.

Yes and no. It’s not only about politics.

Right, it's not like the Citizens have any say in it. It's just a liberal thing.

The economy is built on federal spending. Lots of economic activity. Productivity from an opportunity cost perspective is debatable.

Most of it is. If you look at that list you posted of major corporations located in DC, most of them are here because of federal spending.

All linked to lobbying and insider trading no less.

  • 1 year later...

The House passed Puerto Rico Statehood Act 233-191, although the bill is likely to die in the Senate.

It would allow a referendum in Puerto Rico with three options: statehood, independence, or independence with free association. It would no longer be a US territory.

  • 7 of the 10 states most dependent on the federal government were Republican-voting, with the average red state receiving $1.05 per dollar spent

You've been away for sometime.

I don't think states should be getting anything from the federal government.

I also think too much is sent to the federal government.

I don’t disagree. The point here is that red states aren’t any better than the blue ones.

Well now, that’s the problem Republican politicians have with any plan to add new states, isn’t it?  They’re elected based on the pork they bring home. How dare they have to share Federal dollars with some other place. Forbid their state has to produce enough on its own. gasp!

I think what most of you forget, is, well, I'd be willing to bet, all of the 50 states on average probably receive .90c for every dollar taxed by DC.  Which is why DC spends probably .05c for every dollar taxed pitting you against red people (or blue people in other cases) so you fight and forget its all a money pit
