Well in fairness, Sicily wasn’t part of Italy and Italy wasn’t even a country until 1861.

Like her grandparents were off the boat and hardly ever spoke any English. My GF's mom would say these things to her as a kid, but, interestingly, her grandparents came from a place that didn't even have running water. People love to separate themselves into groups. I brought up your comment to her and said "Screw you and your people!" Lol.

And as far as dialects go, theirs is very similar to Sicilian, but most of the overt racism I've seen comes from northerners. Lots of comments about "polluted blood" from Moroccans. As with anything though, classism is a huge part of it too. Southerners are seen as being poor and stupid by northerners who see themselves as smart and sophisticated. Not much different than what we have here in the US or basically any other country.
