I am far from an expert, but women who are not regular can vary from 7-9 days from one cycle to the next according to the first google search result that I opened. So if a woman’s cycle is varying by even 5 days normally, when should she be starting the counter to determine that she’s a week late to take the test? And then how does that fit into the 6 weeks criteria established by this new law? It is all absurd and ridiculous. When my wife and I were trying to get pregnant, her cycles were very regular and predictable. She missed her period, waited until she thought she was far enough along to test positive and took a test. The test came back negative. This was a week (or more I can’t remember) late. We were on vacation at the time so we went out for drinks, had wine with dinner, and enjoyed the hot tub in our room for a few days until she tested again and got the positive result. Now we were being ultra attentive and specifically trying to get pregnant but can you see how she could have thought she wasn’t pregnant and not taken that 2nd test under normal circumstances? IMO your opinion on this topic shows a complete lack of real world perspective and understanding. As I've said to DEagle, I agree that 6 weeks is too soon of a cutoff. I'm just tired of the general lack of responsibility that is pervasive in this country. That's the reason we have about 900,000 abortions annually in this country to begin with.

But you’re saying that you don’t buy the argument that a woman might not know she’s pregnant at that point…. It is entirely possible and likely that if attentive to her body and cycles a woman could be a week or two late and not know they’re pregnant.

Given the example you provided, yes it’s possible. Is it likely? No, I don’t think it’s likely. Take home tests are pretty accurate if taken after a missed period.

Been through that several times throughout my life in relationships I’ve been in. But IMO there’s no excuse for a sexually active woman who’s not ready for a child to not get a pregnancy test if they are a week late. Fact: Women can still bleed after they've become pregnant. And they do. It's regularly mistaken for a period. Fact: Women in menopause can and will go 6 weeks or more between periods. Fact: There is a zero percent chance that any woman with an irregular period, who is practicing safe sex, is going to take a pregnancy test after every time she has sex. Again, that's ridiculous. Fact: False negatives are a thing with pregnancy tests. They are real and they happen. And even if they are 99% accurate that still means that they are showing a false negative for tens of thousands of women every year.

The average age for women to hit menopause is 51. Women over 40 account for just 3.5% of abortions in this country. Women nearing menopause age are not a driving factor of abortions.
September 3, 20214 yr Basically my take-away is that if you want an abortion in Texas you have about a one or two week window and part of that window many women don’t even know they’re pregnant. The idea that every woman having sex should be rushing off to get a pregnancy test is silly. But the law itself is silly, so…

You spend 40+ years packing the courts with anti-abortion judges, handpicked because of their desire to strike down Roe, and then once you get a firm, unbreakable majority, you dance around the issue through prodding state laws that don't just outright make abortion illegal. Make a state law that outright makes abortion illegal. Take it to the court and watch them uphold it. Then Roe's dead and we can see where how the American people enjoy the world Republicans have been pursing for so long. If they're so certain that that's what the American people want, then I'm sure they'll love it.

They effectively outlawed abortion (in Texas) without making it illegal.

Right, and under the guise of "limited” government.
September 3, 20214 yr I mean, think about this. The GOP has spent decades criticizing laws like the 1964 Civil Rights Act which gave the federal government the ability to sue employers for discrimination. They said it was government overreach. Then they create a law where you can sue anyone for being involved with an abortion.

What I said is that if a woman is sexually active, and would be of the mindset that they would have an abortion if they got pregnant, then there is no excuse to not go take a pregnancy test if their period is a week late and they think they might be pregnant. Being pregnant is a pretty big life changing event...... I agree that the 6 week window is too short as it doesn't give a pregnant women enough time to a) make the decision and b) take the necessary steps to have the procedure (get a consultation, schedule the procedure, etc...). I find it somewhat ironic that the people who are quick to call someone irresponsible who doesn't take the COVID vaccine or who chooses to not wear a mask around others, are the same people who in this instance have the mindset of, "oh your period is a week late and you think you might be pregnant and you'd consider getting an abortion if you are pregnant. Nah don't rush out and get a pregnancy test to check, you have better things to do"

So you kind of proved my point.

I think it's really easy to say "of course I'd track my period closely and follow up with a pregnancy test right away if I had sex in the previous 2 months" when you've never menstruated before.

I don't have to have menstruated to have been in this situation. It takes two to tango in this instance, lol. In every long term relationship I've been in, at one point, we had gotten into a situation where my gf's period was late, and so she took a pregnancy test just to make sure (even though we were using contraception).

At one point. Now imagine you have to track it every month. And every month has serveral days of variation. And sometimes you skip a month or have a big delay just out of the blue. Etc. You think that it might slip your mind occasionally over the course of 30+ years?

What I meant by saying "at one point” is that in every relationship ive been in, I had AT LEAST one instance where my gf’s period was late by more than a couple days, and so she took a pregnancy test to make sure she wasn’t. It was never a: "hey my period is a week late” ”oh wow that’s interesting. Do you want pizza or Chinese for dinner?” And with regards to tracking cycles, it’s much easier today than it was years ago. There are apps for that now. We’re using that now as we are trying for number 2!

I just think we're kidding ourselves if we think we can relate to that. Good luck trying for 2. Just had our first and it's the best/worst. Interestingly it took 3 pregnancy tests before my wife popped up positive. Granted she was started testing like 2 days before her missed period cause she's neurotic but still.

Well I sure hope 12 year olds aren't having sex. Yikes..... Also I think your numbers may be exaggerated by saying "hundreds". A woman has 12 cycles per year. For hypothetical sake, let's say a woman was to start having sex at age 17. She'd have to be having sex every single month from the age of 17 to 34 just to have over 200 cycles TOTAL while being sexually active. Obviously, that's not typical. And again, we're only talking about instances where a woman would be a week late while sexually active and thus might think she's pregnant to begin with. I used my personal experience simply because I think what I've been in is pretty typical. Thank you! Yes, that's right, how is the little one doing? And how are you guys doing? Getting any sleep yet? Our 3 year old has not gotten into the routine of getting out of his bed just about every night in the middle of the night and climbing into our bed. So that's been fun! lol. "Granted she was started testing like 2 days before her missed period cause she's neurotic but still. " lol sounds like my wife. With our first, I was able to talk her out of doing that, and waiting to the day of the missed period.
