I miss PA. That said, Florida actually has a half decent economy and things to do. The downsides are the heat and the food sucks.

Yeah, I could not take that heat. The heat& humidity up here for 3 months already kills me. If I go to Florida, it'll be in the fall/winter.

Texas Gets Ready To Allow Unlicensed Carrying Of Handguns

https://www.npr.org/2021/05/24/999975843/texas-gets-ready-to-allow-unlicensed-carrying-of-handguns

Quote

Texas is poised to remove one of its last major gun restrictions after lawmakers approved allowing people to carry handguns without a license, and the background check and training that go with it.

The Republican-dominated Legislature approved the measure Monday, sending it to Gov. Greg Abbott, who has said he will sign it despite the objections of law enforcement groups who say it would endanger the public and police.

Where in Florida are you at?  We go down to Clearwater for spring training just about every year.  I’ve always enjoyed the food there. Some really good grouper!

Oddly appropriate.

Honestly, having to obtain a permit to carry a firearm is ridiculous. If you can't obtain a permit, you also can't buy a handgun. If you get stopped and don't have a permit, but are otherwise legal to have a gun on your person, it's the same crime as not being able to obtain a permit and carrying anyway. Laws, like locks, only stop honest people.

Texas is the new California.

Except they're having the same problems with their independent power grid. Weird.

Almost like it has more to do with population growth, climate and weather patterns, and commitment to competent energy suppliers than the particular politics of a state or region.

Less gratifying than pooping on regions whose politics differ from our own though.

It isn't about politics. It is: Does your planning and policies support what is happening on the ground in your region?  And if it doesn't, what are you going to do to fix it?  If our leaders are determined to make everything a political argument, we are doomed.

Why is ERCOT asking us to conserve electricity? Here’s what we know

It looks like the trouble is shutdowns due to unscheduled maintenance. Usually, lots of unscheduled maintenance means you have been skipping regular maintenance, using crappy parts, or other shortcuts (usually financial)

‘Redneck Rave’ Descends Into Throat Slashing, Impalements, and Mass Arrests

A massive country music festival in Kentucky this past weekend started off on rocky footing: Police found meth, marijuana, and an open bottle of alcohol in the first vehicle they stopped at a traffic checkpoint. One of the people in the car had two active warrants out for their arrest.

"We were like, ‘Well, this doesn’t bode well for the weekend,’” Edmonson County Sheriff Shane Doyle told the Lexington Herald-Leader.

By the end of the five-day bash, dubbed the "Redneck Rave,” one man had been impaled, one woman had been strangled to the point of unconsciousness, and one throat had been slit. In all, Edmonson authorities arrested 14 people, and charged four dozen people from five states.

The event, organized by country rapper Justin Time, took place in Blue Holler Offroad Park and drew a crowd of tens of thousands, doubling the population of the unincorporated town of Ollie, which is so small it does not have a stoplight. Redneck Rave promoters bragged that they had sold more than 20,000 tickets. The lengthy getdown, advertised as the "biggest country party you’ll ever go to,” boasted a demolition derby, goldfish racing, and a full-scale football game as well as a series of concerts.

Wow no firearm violations, who’d of thought.

It's only true if you post it from Twitter. Sooooooo sad and unimaginable that this would happen

I can think of a lot more things that suck about Florida. Trump living there is just one of them.

They're not sending their best.

Last time I was in Florida I learned they build (Rascal?) scooters built for two.

Also apparently they can haul over a ton of weight.

Report finds companies were paid to cut off power during February storm

The UT researchers said that 67 sites were allowed to sign up for a voluntary "emergency response” program coordinated by ERCOT.

Dozens of mostly natural gas facilities, including some directly supplying fuel to power plants around the state, were paid to have their electricity cut off in an emergency like February’s devastating winter storm, according to a report released Tuesday by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin.

The UT researchers said that 67 sites, mostly gas refining and pipeline infrastructure locations around Texas, were allowed to sign up for a voluntary "emergency response” program coordinated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT, which runs the state's power grid.

Of those 67 locations receiving payments from ERCOT, at least five sites "later identified themselves to the electric utility as critical natural gas infrastructure,” according to the UT researchers.

Yes, they were PAID to shut off gas supplies.
