Oxford Schools Superintendent Tim Throne said at the news conference the shooting left him shocked. "It's devastating," he said.
Throne declined to say why there were no metal detectors in the school, but did say that to his knowledge, metal detectors never came up in conversation prior to the shooting.
"The vast majority of schools in America don't have metal detectors," Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said.

this conversation needs to change. again, its a disgusting thing to have to admit, but here we are. while all the debating goes on about who is at fault for this and that, there is a way to combat this lunacy.

My daughter went to a public school in Houston and they didn’t have metal detectors. Her new school doesn’t have metal detectors either and they had a school shooting back in September.  Fwiw

the gun culture is too strong in this country, man. school shootings happen...then there's a lot more talk than action....and the "solution" is to have active shooter drills in schools.

Metal detectors and hiring the people to man them costs money.  Are you willing to pay more in property taxes just to appease gun nuts?

Short of attempting to confiscate firearms from law abiding citizens, there's really not much you can do to prevent a shooting like this, when the parents show the complete and total lack of judgement that they did.

i hate that the discussion even has to take place, but metal detectors could help keep the weapons from getting in the schools. it in no way solves the problem, though.

they could definitely help, imo.  but then you hear about school districts that can't even afford books for their students, let alone metal detectors.

am i willing to pay more to save the lives of children ? yes. of course we could always counter the cost by cutting out the ridiculous layers of unnecessary administration in districts.

Right.  More than likely putting in metal detectors and staffing them with security guards costs you a few teachers though.  My daughter’s high school has two buildings and about 8 different entrances.

well in pa the concern on cost could go away with one simple thing, take revenue from pot sales. problem solved.

Why come up with practical solutions when you can use school shootings to further your end goal of banning guns?

I actually worked at a school with metal detectors.  It was in Lower Manhattan though.

Yeah, it’s not a practical solution for most schools.  Even many urban ones.  The schools that install them usually have gang violence concerns.

Metal detectors will do nothing. There are other entrances to schools. When I was in school (with metal detectors) kids used to put pens in the side entrances and then come back through that entrance. This was always so they could go get lunch at the local pizza shop but it's really easy to circumvent a metal detector at the front entrance.

absolutely wrong.

again,  the cost can be paid by tax revenue from pot sales. this claim that it isnt practical is an old claim that doesn't stand any longer.

If a kid wants to get a gun into a school (or execute a mass shooting) he will get around the metal detectors. It's naïve to think otherwise.

i didnt say that at all, you made the claim that metal detectors would do NOTHING, which is completely false.

Yeah, you're right. They'd cost money.

and ? use pot tax revenue.

metal detectors in no way eliminate the problem, but they would definitely help matters. the issues that cause people to go nuts and the issue of those people getting access to guns can still be debated, in the meantime this could help.
