Can't find the thread but the jury are recommending that the Parkland shooter gets life in prison

Pretty high bar they've set on what qualifies someone for the death penalty.

To me, I have no issue with the death penalty- given:

1) the heinousness of the crime shows a complete lack of respect for life- killing people you dont know, on purpose, unprovoked (proves to me you are unfit to live in society,( we put down "mad" dogs, I have no problem putting down horrendous human beings)

2) Proven beyond a shadow of a doubt in a court of law

I would also Limit the appeal process- must be executed within 5 years of guilty verdict- reduces overall burden/costs of taxpayers etc.

The parkland shooter meets this criteria.

If people are completely against the death penalty, I get it.  I don't agree but I also can wrap my head around that sentiment at least.  I'm having a much harder time understanding how you can be for it in some cases, but not think a murderer of 17 children qualifies.

The only thing that I can think of is, they may be claiming he is insane and incapable of being responsible for his actions- to which I would retort, Then he wont know we are killing him for it.

If a person shows themself to be unfit to live amongst society, without killing people, then I dont feel the need to keep them alive.

Ridiculous. He deserves something even beyond the death penalty.

5 dead, others injured, as a 15-year-old opened fire on people on a walking trail Thursday.

School gunman had AR-15-style weapon, 600 rounds of ammo

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The 19-year-old gunman who killed a teacher and a 15-year-old girl at a St. Louis high school was armed with an AR-15-style rifle and what appeared to be more than 600 rounds of ammunition, Police Commissioner Michael Sack said Tuesday.

Orlando Harris also left behind a hand-written note offering his explanation for the shooting Monday at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School. Tenth-grader Alexandria Bell and 61-year-old physical education teacher Jean Kuczka died and seven students were wounded.

Police killed Harris in an exchange of gunfire.

Sack read Harris' note in which the young man lamented that he had no friends, no family, no girlfriend and a life of isolation. In the note, he called it the "perfect storm for a mass shooter.”

Sack said Harris had some ammo strapped to his chest, some in a bag, and other magazines were found dumped in stairwells.

The attack forced students to barricade doors and huddle in classroom corners, jump from windows and run out of the building to seek safety. One terrorized girl said she was eye-to-eye with the shooter before his gun apparently jammed and she was able to run out. Several people inside the school said they heard Harris warn, "You are all going to die!”

Harris, 19, graduated from the school last year. The FBI was assisting police in the investigation. Sack, speaking at a news conference, urged people to come forward when someone who appears to suffer from mental illness or distress begins "speaking about purchasing firearms or causing harm to others.”

Relatives of those killed mourned their losses.

Horrible. Shooter was 19-year-old Orlando Harris:

The Assault weapons ban worked. Mass shootings declined as the result of it and went back up when the GOP Congress did not extend the ban. We are now where we are because of it. The AR-15 and AK-47 are weapons of war, built for the battle field and meant for soldiers. However, the NRA wants civilians to have them so they can kill children in schools.

Yeah, I remember when the NRA came out pro child killing. Very controversial at the time, but still understandable.

The share of gun crimes involving AWs declined by 17 percent to 72 percent for the locations observed in this study (Baltimore, Miami, Milwaukee, Boston, St. Louis, and Anchorage) during all or some of the  1995-2003 post-ban period. This is consistent with patterns found in national data on guns recovered by police and reported to ATF.

Of course, these are government figures, so you have the out to wring your  panties about the source.
