Eagles’ wide receiver coach Aaron Moorehead spoke with reporters on Tuesday and talked a lot about the competition among such a young WR room and how he’s excited to see what these guys bring to training camp as they work for their roster spots.

Here’s what the coach had to say:

On DeVonta Smith

Moorehead admitted that there’s a lot to like about Smith, and he was a little familiar with the receiver having recruited him coming out of high school. Throughout his career, Moorehead pointed out that Smith always stood out on tape despite being in a talented receiver room at Alabama — and he’s someone that can make plays all over the field.

The coach was asked whether Smith’s weight was a concern, but he was quick to acknowledge that on paper it might look concerning but it really isn’t. He has a lot of experience going against physical corners and that was never a problem for him in college, and he doesn’t expect it to be a problem in the NFL, either.

He later said that Smith hasn’t taken on a leadership role just yet, but that ability is inside him. Moorehead noted that Smith has been embraced by the room and team, and it’s allowed the WR to come out of his shell pretty quickly and feel more comfortable being himself.

On the young WR room

Moorehead acknowledged that he’s coaching a very young wide receiver room — with the oldest guy being Greg Ward, who is almost 26 years old. But, he said that just means that they’re full of energy and have young legs, and need to focus on being consistent.

As far as not going against a live defense during OTAs, Moorehead said that all the extra time they had to work on lining up and getting timing down on routes was actually beneficial, especially for his young group of receivers. Now, when they show up for training camp, there should be no excuses and they should be ready to go.

Other notables

  • When asked about Travis Fulgham, Moorehead admitted that it took a bit for him to adjust when defenses started to scheme against him, and he also had to play through some injuries. But, he doesn’t question whether Fulgham has what it takes, and he looks forward to seeing what he can do this year. "The guy has it,” he said.
  • Moorehead noted that Jalen Reagor is doing a good job of listening to the coaches and his family, and tuning out a lot of the outside noise. The coach clarified that he doesn’t think all that noise was impacting Reagor on the field, but he was reading it, and they just had to emphasize not to listen to what people on social media were saying.
  • The WR said that it was tough for JJ Arcega-Whiteside last year who was in a good space mentally, but kept getting injured. JJAW has had a good three weeks with the team, and Moorehead said that he’s excited to see what he can do this offseason and this fall.
