Will Eagles’ Landon Dickerson be ready to compete for starting job? Training camp breakdown

The Eagles will return to the NovaCare Complex on July 27 for the start of training camp. Under new head coach Nick Sirianni, the Eagles will look to bounce back from a dreadful 4-11-1 campaign.

In the days leading up to training camp, NJ Advance Media will break down each position on the Eagles’ roster. From position battles to major storylines, we’ll take an in-depth look at each spot on the depth chart.

PREVIOUS BREAKDOWNS: QB | RB | WR | TE | OT

Our training camp preview series continues with a look at guard:

The Characters

Brandon Brooks: The starting right guard is back after a lost season due to an Achilles injury. In the best shape of his life, the three-time Pro Bowl lineman is looking to show he still has a ton left in the tank. If he can stay healthy, Brooks will be a huge asset for the Eagles’ offense. - Lock

Isaac Seumalo: The longtime starting left guard needs to stay healthy and continue to improve if he wants to keep his job for the entire season. With second-round pick Landon Dickerson now on the roster, Seumalo will be pushed throughout the campaign. - Lock

Landon Dickerson: The second-round rookie is recovering from ACL surgery. While he probably won’t start the summer on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, it’s fair to predict that he will be limited to start training camp. If Dickerson can play at some point during the preseason, he will push Seumalo for playing time. Even if he’s not an immediate starter, Dickerson will probably be the top interior backup lineman. - Lock

Nate Herbig: Year 3 will be huge for Herbig. Once seen as a possible long-term replacement for Brooks or center Jason Kelce, Herbig needs to step up with the arrival of Dickerson. Herbig is probably in the best spot of the group behind Brooks, Seumalo and Dickerson. He lost 30 pounds this summer in preparation for a new offense and coaching staff. - On The Bubble

Matt Pryor: While his jack-of-all-trades versatility was appealing last summer, Pryor struggled when given long-term looks in the lineup. He needs to have a monster camp to stick around. - On The Bubble

Ross Pierschbacher: The Alabama alum joined the Eagles late last season. Given his background with QB Jalen Hurts, perhaps he will be helped by the familiarity. He needs to beat out Herbig and/or Pryor for a job. - On The Bubble

Sua Opeta: A Jeff Stoutland favorite, Opeta is in for an interesting camp battle this offseason. Opeta needs to show that he’s more than just a guard to stick around. A college offensive tackle, Opeta might see looks on the outside of the line if injuries occur during camp. - On The Bubble

Kayode Awosika: An undrafted rookie with notable upside, Awosika is a dark horse for a roster spot. Every summer, Stoutland seems to find an undrafted guard to develop. Awosika is the latest in the long line of under-the-radar competitors. - On The Bubble

Biggest Question: Will Landon Dickerson be ready for training camp?

Dickerson is a freak of nature. Just a few months after knee surgery, he was doing cartwheels at Alabama’s pro day. Before that, he took the final snap in Alabama’s National Championship win over Ohio State.

It’s hard to predict how much Dickerson will do this summer without information on his knee recovery. That said, the Eagles don’t plan on redshirting him this season, as they did with cornerback Sidney Jones in 2017. If Dickerson is able to participate in camp, the team could bring him along slowly and eventually insert him into the lineup when they feel like he’s ready for a role.

Battle to Watch: Isaac Seumalo vs. Landon Dickerson

Again, this battle is based on Dickerson’s participation. While Seumalo will benefit from being the incumbent starter, the Eagles drafted Dickerson to be a difference-maker on the line.

Both players can play left guard and center, so the loser of a potential battle is likely to be the offensive line’s sixth man of sorts. Seumalo and Dickerson are also likely to start next to each other in 2022 when Kelce is likely to retire from the NFL.

LOL! There is zero chance Herbig doesn't make this team. It's possible some team may inquire about a trade --- maybe for Herbig, maybe for Brooks or Seumalo. But even if no trade happens for any of those guys, Herbig makes this team. Right now I see him as the first replacement for Brooks if Brooks gets hurt or has to miss a game due to something else.

Agreed - Herbig was good last year, actually one of our best and most consistent linemen. No way he doesn't make the team. Really good versatile young back up who could well develop into a starter. Lock.

Hang on Dickerson vs Seumalo? I thought Dickerson was seen as a C or RG?

Dickerson, Seumalo, and Herbig are all capable of lining up anywhere in the interior. There are some people that still aren't very high on Seumalo and don't realize how good he is becoming. So he's the easy "target for replacement" starter if you want to project Dickerson winning a job. Dickerson will probably be the 1st option to replace Kelce if he has to come out and the first option to replace Seumalo for the same reason. Herbig will probably be the 1st option to replace Brooks.
