I get your point, but the thing is that the mRNA vaccines for Covid are out for a very very short period of time - but for J&J requiring two jabs. And already, a booster is needed? And how long will that third shot be good for? The truth is that none of us knows. Nobody called for third shots when these vaccines debuted. I would LOVE if our scientists created a shot that gave long term protection against coronaviruses. Right now, it does not appear as though that is the case.

This is SOOOO different than the polio and smallpox examples that are given. Those viruses were a plague for humans for a long time. The morbidity rate for both viruses is much much higher than for Covid. Without minimizing the side effects of Covid, overall, those for polio and smallpox are much much worse - this is beyond debate. The trial period for the polio vaccine was much longer. For smallpox, even much longer than that. Jonas Salk declined the opportunity to patent the polio vaccine because he was more concerned about the well being of the public than profit. Can we say the same for Pfizer, Moderna, J&J, Astra Zeneca??? Oh - and how many boosters required for polio and smallpox vaccines?

The reason why boosters aren't required is because we've achieved herd immunity in the United States. If you travel to places where polio or smallpox is still endemic boosters are required. Salk's vaccine was also replaced within years by Sabin's. It was considered a risk and was not without criticism. It wasn't until 1979 that the last US sourced case of polio was documented. Polio was not immediately eliminated by vaccines, the efficacy just wasn't there. And the number of polio cases and deaths is dwarfed by Covid. At its peak polio cases per 100k were in the 30s. On an annualized basis that number is orders of magnitude higher with Covid. We've had about 3 Covid deaths per 100k population just in the US in the last 7 days. Compared to the annualized numbers above Covid is far worse. You're just so misinformed on this.

Quote For children with polio in the late 1940s, the disease caused paralysis in 1 in 1,000 cases of children aged 5 to 9. The rest had only mild symptoms and developed immunities. No big deal. Let the little craps toughen up.

Compared to the annualized numbers above Covid is far worse. You're just so misinformed on this. John, I got vaccinated for polio in the early '60's. It was an oral vaccine given on sugar cubes. No booster was ever given to people in my generation, or as far as I know, older generations. There was no herd immunity in the 60's. None for at least the better part of the 70's. And this vaccine was very effective. Most of us knew somebody from our parents generation who had polio. They were handicapped, walked with a limp. The vaccine thankfully helped eliminated this scourge. As for smallpox, I don't recall boosters being given for that virus either before it was eliminated. And for this generation living in fear of Covid, you have no clue as to how virulent polio and smallpox were. Covid is a pimple on your butt compared to those two viruses.
September 17, 20214 yr Once again the antivax moron is wrong. Covid is collectively far more lethal than polio ever was in any given year.

Mike - you can quote all the stats you like - stats lie. You did not live through what polio was. If you contracted polio, there was an excellent chance you'd be handicapped for life. Did you find stats on that? Do the stats tell you what percentage of those who died with polio also had co-morbidities that they died from, and whether the co-morbidities were listed as causes of death? The times are so different now. I assure you 99% of those on this thread were not alive when polio was a scourge and don't understand what it was or did to you. Anyone else here alive during the 50's or 60's or earlier care to educate the younger population here on what polio was?

Up to 95 percent of people infected with polio have no symptoms. However, infected persons without symptoms can still spread the virus and cause others to develop polio.
