Elon Musk is using his social media network to spread election conspiracy theories about U.S. disasters — just as online falsehoods are complicating the federal response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

Musk has helped spread accusations that the Federal Emergency Management Agency "actively blocked” donations to victims of Helene and is "seizing goods … and locking them away to state they are their own” — allegations that FEMA officials call false and which run afoul of state and local Republican leaders’ praise for the assistance from Washington.

Without mentioning Musk or Trump, FEMA leaders said Tuesday that misinformation is causing problems for Helene survivors, some of whom are being dissuaded from seeking help. They said it’s also harming emergency responders, whose morale has taken a hit amid threats to their safety.

The wave of false conspiracy theories "is absolutely the worst I have ever seen,” FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell told reporters on a Tuesday morning call. The agency has long had a rumor control page to combat the kind of scams that often flourish after a disaster, she added. "I anticipated some of this, but not to the extent that we’re seeing.”

No doubt Musk is doing this at the direction of Trump. Musk wants his tax cut.

You are talking about people from the hills. They are proud people. They'd rather go about by themselves because that's how they've always done it. They purposely live away from people because they have a deep-seeded mistrust of others and institutions. Now they are in the midst of a disaster that is overwhelming. They aren't prepared to deal with a tragedy of this magnitude. It is not like a coastal area. They don't prepare evacuation routes. They don't listen to the forecasts. Many don't have other places to go or the resources to leave, They just keep to themselves, only trusting each other. Now they all need help. Help is slow and they are wasting away waiting for it to arrive. It is more than anyone can fix in a day. They are primed for this sort of disinformation because nobody can put their lives back to the way it was before.

Great post.  Like Elon Musk would know any of this.

It is sunny and clear with just a moderate amount of wind in Miami Beach at the moment.  Heading out on the bike path for a nice bike ride.

You do realize that there are shelters all over the place in Fla.

My daughter lives in Cape Coral. Her and my knuckleheaded SIL have decided to stay home and ride it out with their two kids. Hopefully the mangroves cam suck up some of the surge.

While Cape Coral is south of expected landfall, they are most definitely starting to have a tornado threat as well as surge issues.  Good luck.

Yes, they just said they are getting outer bands and there have been some tornadoes. Thank you!🙏

Was wondering where the hurricane discussion was

Tornados have been seen

I know people who are fleeing Tampa, for Orlando.

Not sure that was the best move.

Not sure what evac zone she is in, but cape coral is forecast to get up to 6' of storm surge.  (If they're on the beach basically like 12'.  Latest models have it going somewhere between Tampa and Ft Myers, which means all the surge Tampa was supposed to get went to points south.)

Wind and the rain arent the big issues, oddly enough.  Storm surge and flooding are the main dangers during a hurricane.  Most homes in Florida built after the 80s are single floor built out of CMUs, and surprisingly you don't have to go that far inland to get out of an evac zone.  Florida is flat (fun fact, if the terrain of Big Thunder Mountain Rail Road was real, it would be the highest point in FL), but it's not a pool table. Usually you go a third of a county in from the coast and you're out of the surge danger.

On the southeast side of the state, we're fine over here.  Winds kicking up slightly - sun is out.  Just finished a long bike ride on the beach walk path.

Ah the right wing conspiracy machine is hard at work.

Luckily, the Make America Gullible Assclowns party just loves this stuff.

My BIL lives just north or Orlando in Deland. He should be safe from flooding, but tornadoes and high winds will be a danger.

She is in B and should have evacuated, but not too far from Zone C. They stayed put for every hurricane for the past 8 years and made out ok, but think they will need some extra luck this time.

Many of these clowns are evolution deniers, and think the earth is 5-6,000 years old. They don’t science at all.

That is surprising, give how he treats people. The actual news stories don't mention him not being reimbursed. I can believe that.
