Tick population is exploding because of climate change.

That is not really what the article says. A tick borne syndrome first reported in 2002 has increased. Lone star ticks one of the carriers range has increased. Author creates misleading headline. New disease underreported historically incidence increases now that it is able to be tested for.

That's why they are finding alpha-gal from lone star ticks north and west of its original range. I guess they were only testing in the south. rolleyes

"We thought this thing was relatively rare 10 years ago but it’s become more and more common and it’s something I expect to continue to grow very rapidly,” said Brandon Hollingsworth, an expert at the University of South Carolina who has researched the tick’s expansion. "We’ve seen an explosive increase in these ticks, which is a concern."

Cases will rise further as the ticks spread, aided by their adaptability to local conditions, according to Laura Harrington, an entomologist and disease specialist at Cornell University. "With their adaptive nature and increasing temperatures, I don’t see many limits to these ticks over time,” she said.

"The range is spreading and emerging in new areas so the risk is increasing over time,” Oltean said.

It's not just lone star ticks either.

The article states that lone star ticks are not the only tick that carries the disease. Secondly, the article states that there are only 110k confirmed cases but it is probably 450k because the disease is underreported. It is a new syndromethat hasn'tbeen widelytested at all. Doctors would and probably still don't test for it. You bought a sensational headline.

I wasn't making a climate change argument, just pointing out that ticks are spreading in general, and people should be vigilant and aware of the very real dangers they pose as a disease vector.

I agree. As habitat is encroached upon and the ease at which these critters spread, it does merit increased vigilance.

John Oliver had a good bit on this. Ticks and their associated diseases used to be much more localized. Development of those areas have driven away predators and competitors to small rodents who aid in spreading the ticks around. It's why Lyme disease cases have skyrocketed over the past few decades.

What’s not to get? Earth has had climate for many years. Before we were born even

Yeah, my comment was more tongue in cheek as we have had "climate" since the earth had an atmosphere. Bear might be the dumbest poster on EMB. At least as far as actual IQ. I can think of others less dumb that post far worse nonsense.
