Tashaun Gipson- Being released by HOU

Could be a nice piece in the secondary and won’t count towards the compensatory formula now. Allows Mills to not have to worry about safety as you would have Gipson, McLeod, Wallace and Parks.

I feel like it’s too crowded, many people project Wallace to start this year in some fashion. Mills is moving to safety he needs to be there. Parks will play a role. I doubt Gipson goes somewhere where he has to work just to get limited playing time. I like our safety situation as is.

He's 29 and being released.  That suggests caution.

But what does he cost, and would he be better than Parks?

Being released...by Bill O’Brien

I'd like to see Mills at Safety. Always thought he should go back to his natural position from college.

I'd bring him in on a one-year deal, although I do like K'Von Wallace's potential to be a future starter for us at safety.

I'm not completely sold that the position change for Jalen Mills will make that big of an improvement in his play. If Maddox/Jones struggle significantly, could we see Mills move back to CB and play at CB2? I would imagine between Parks, Wallace, and Gipson, one of those guys should at least be serviceable.

I'd bring him in as a competent starter. We don't know what we have in Parks and who knows how Mills will take to the position. Low cost low risk move I think. At worst he's a reliable back up?

This was my thought as well...allows Mills to be CB2 where he is serviceable with S help. I don’t trust Maddox or Jones. Makes your S room: Gipson, McLeod, Wallace, Parks and your CBs Slay, Mills, Maddox, Jones, Robey-Coleman, LeBlanc.

Yeah I wouldn't mind that. I mean hey if Jones or Maddox earn that CB #2 role then Mills can be tried at Safety. In fact he can spend most of his time in practice at Safety as he knows what is required of him at corner in this scheme.

Plus the 3rd safety role in our defense is very valuable. I wouldn't say our safety room is too stacked for a signing like this. We have Rodney McLeod as the only bonafide proven starter. The remaining guys are question marks:

Will Parks - versatile DB who has rotated between nickel CB and S, remains to be seen if he can handle full-time role?

Jalen Mills - college S who was converted to CB in the NFL, remains to be seen if he's a starting caliber S?

K'Von Wallace - college S who has the versatility to play in the nickel, but can we expect a rookie 4th rounder to start for us right away? Perhaps the most intriguing of our options.

Marcus Epps - backup S that can help us on special teams, not starting material

Rudy Ford - same as Epps

I think Gipson can easily take the spot of Rudy Ford and serve as our stop-gap veteran for this season with a best case scenario of Wallace developing into a starter by year 2 :

FS: McLeod / Epps

SS: Gipson / Wallace

3S: Parks / Mills

LCB: Slay / Jones

RCB: Maddox / Douglas

NCB: Robey - Coleman / LeBlanc
