Eagles sign former Colts WR to practice squad

The Eagles on Monday signed former Colts wide receiver Deon Cain to their practice squad. He replaces 2020 Eagles receiving leader Travis Fulgham, released from the practice squad a week earlier.

Cain, 25, was the Colts’ 6th-round draft pick out of Clemson in 2018 and he spent a year and a half with the Colts, where his offensive coordinator was Nick Sirianni.

Cain spent all of 2018 on Injured Reserve with the Colts and the first half of 2019 on the active roster. He played in seven games, got 228 offensive snaps and caught nine passes for 124 yards, turning seven of those nine receptions into first downs.

The Colts released him in early November and signed him to the practice squad, but the Steelers signed him to their active roster, and he played in six games for Pittsburgh, catching five passes for 72 yards, including four more first downs.

He played in two games for the Steelers last year without a reception and then signed a futures contract with the Ravens immediately after the season. He was waived with an injury settlement on Sept. 3 after suffering a concussion during a preseason game against Washington at FedEx Field.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Cain initially worked out for the Eagles late last month.

Cain is the third wide receiver on the Eagles’ practice squad. The others are John Hightower, their 5th-round pick last year, and former Arizona Cardinal KeeSean Johnson.

Cain caught 130 passes for 2,040 yards and 20 touchdowns in three seasons at Clemson, two of them with Deshaun Watson.

To make room on the practice squad for Cain, the Eagles released linebacker Christian Elliss from the practice squad. The Eagles signed him on Sept. 9.

The Eagles also activated interior offensive lineman Sua Opeta from the COVID reserve list, where he had been since Oct. 5, before the Panthers game.

Opeta played in eight games with two starts last year. He’s played in two games - both on special teams - this year.
