Eagles bring back Lovato a day after cutting him

A day after Rick Lovato was released, the Eagles have re-signed their veteran long snapper.

It was assumed that Lovato would be back because, well, the Eagles need a long snapper and Lovato is a pretty good one.

But on Monday, when the Eagles claimed QB Reid Sinnett off waivers, they needed a roster spot immediately. The Joe Flacco trade didn’t officially go through until Tuesday, which freed up the roster spot needed to bring Lovato back.

Lovato is a vested veteran, which means he wasn’t subject to the NFL’s waiver system. So as long as Lovato was willing to simply re-sign with the Eagles on Tuesday — he obviously was — then they didn’t risk losing a younger developmental player to a waiver claim. The Eagles did this with Cre’Von LeBlanc last year.

In addition to bringing back Lovato, the Eagles also made a defensive back swap on the practice squad, releasing cornerback Michael Jacquet and signing safety Jared Mayden.

Mayden, 23, went undrafted out of Alabama last year and previously spent time with the 49ers. He played in two games with the Niners last season and played 24 special teams snaps.

Eagles special teams coordinator Michael Clay held the assistant ST coordinator job in San Francisco from 2018-20 so he has familiarity with Mayden.
