Time to start treating China like the thug regime they are. Not only the government but corporations like Nike and celeb spokesmen like Lebron should put morals over profits.

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/11/18/biden-says-wh-considering-diplomatic-boycott-of-beijing-olympics-522974

President Joe Biden said on Thursday that the U.S. was weighing a diplomatic boycott of the coming Winter Olympics in Beijing, a move that proponents say would be a highly visible rebuke of the Chinese government and its human rights record.

Ugh, hate admitting this...but I 100% agree with you.  F China.

I will say that both Democrats and Republicans have been too soft on China and Russia. I’d like to see an old school cold warrior in the White House at some point.

Completely agreed.  Washington defers far too much and too often to Beijing and Moscow...both parties.

Yeah. Let's outsource foreign policy to corporations and athletes. Makes sense.

Corporations exist to maximize profits for shareholders. They don't have the luxury of morals. If we want to punish China, put in sanctions and stop companies by law from using Chinese labor. But asking companies to forego profit is like blaming Rite-Aid for selling you Tylenol that ends up being tainted with poison.

Put the blame where it belongs.

Everyone has the luxury of morals

Corporations don't because...THEY AREN'T PEOPLE. They exist to maximize shareholder return. They have a fiduciary duty to do so as a public company.

Want Nike to stop making shoes in China? Have enough people boycott Nike in order to hurt their bottom line. That's how it works in the grown-up world. Crying that Nike should do the right thing is just as stupid as leftists crying that companies should pay people more because it would be more "fair."

That's not how reality works.

I know.  I get it.  But I also know that individuals make up corporations and individuals have choices and moral compass’s

There's a thing called Goodwill.  It's right there on the balance sheet.

Individual executives at Nike have their own morals, but they can't allow those to impact the decisions they make on behalf of shareholders. They have one job and one job alone -- to maximize return to shareholders. Any CEO that decided to purposely forego profits in order to comply with his personal moral code should be immediately fired by the Board of Directors.

This really isn't complicated. Corporations don't have morals, and the people running corporations would be violating their fiduciary duties if they allowed their own morals to guide decisions.

I love it when Ebeneezer Vikas shows up :D

Goodwill is an intangible asset which is created when the purchase price of assets exceeds the accounting book value. Like when you buy a company for $20 billion, but the tangible assets are only valued on the books at $15 billion -- that creates $5 billion in Goodwill on the balance sheet. It has nothing to do with "feelings."

But please, continue educating me on how accounting and finance work. This should be entertaining.

I simply will not countenance stupidity.

Easy there Tiger, it's just that the blanket statement that corporations have no incentive to be moral is kinda hogwash.  Look at facebook taking it in the chin, look at Chobani or Fenty eating up established juggernauts.  A ton of it is on the backs of goodwill created by morality or lack of it.

Hence when I referenced losing sales which would change behavior.

But keep talking about things you don't understand, it's fun.

Lebron James can do whatever he wants. Meanwhile I'm free to not purchase anything that idiot is hawking because he's a phony and a sellout. Same with Nike. I'll start buying my dad sneakers from New Balance. But yes, treating China as a pariah state like North Korea and Iran should be on the table.

Good. That's how this is supposed to work. If enough people do that, Nike will change it's behavior in reaction to the profit motive.

Thank you for explaining to him what goodwill is.  My CPA brain about exploded when I read that.  Like Oprah out there...You get goodwill!  You get goodwill!  You get goodwill!  We all get goodwill!
