Avoiding trial, a former hedge fund manager turns over $70 million in stolen antiques

https://www.npr.org/2021/12/07/1062111007/michael-steinhardt-antiquities-prosecutor-seized-hedge-fund

Quote

Those are among the 180 stolen antiquities that former hedge fund manager and philanthropist Michael Steinhardt turned over under an agreement with New York City prosecutors. The deal, reached after a multiyear investigation into his activities, also slaps Steinhardt with a lifetime ban on collecting any other historical relics.

How many more does he still have?

He did get banned from further collecting. Probably stings.

Is that what is happening here? It doesn't seem like it.

Krazy-8 was a government informant and we saw what happened to him.

No. We ain't saying jack slit.

I am saying THIS bozo, who deals with illegal artifacts, gets to turn over 180 of his illegal artifacts and gets a slap on the wrist, and a warning not to do it again. With a punishment like that, I can see how much of a deterrent this punishment is going to be.

How do you feel about this POS? Any opinion?

Did he give any useful info up in exchange for a reduced punishment?

in a perfect world he’d do a lot of time. If I were to guess, this is the main reason he didn’t, because his scalp would be great for the career of the investigators:

Vance said the decision not to prosecute Steinhardt meant that the relics could be returned more quickly and that witnesses and other parallel investigations would remain secret.

It would likely compromise other investigations to prosecute him, and if they’re going after mob bosses as indicated in the article, then those probably took priority.

See TEWs post. Plus he wasn’t stealing them, he was buying them. From the article posted it is not clear if he knew they were stolen.

In regards to his crimes, I have little knowledge of the legal arguments or punishment for such crimes, but I do know that it very difficult to prove in many cases....I also have no idea of what information he gave up to negotiate a deal with authorities or who offered one. I also have no idea about the deal he made and what the consequences are if he gets caught again.

And you always have to take prosecutors and defense attorneys sensationalized comments with a grain of salt.

Not surprising that he got a slap on the wrist.......this is a non-victim crime in which full restitution was made.  He is a respected guy who contributes who does a lot of philanthropy.

But being ignorant of the legal details of stolen artifacts, any opinion of this guy is moot.

Toaster is trying to say that rich people don't face consequences in this country because they are rich in an effort to say that only poor people get punished for their crimes. It's actually kind of funny because of the dozens of instances violent repeat offenders murder/assault people on a daily basis and get light sentences or simply caught and released time and time again. I post many of them in the Floyd thread. We have a serious under-incarceration problem in this country.
