Because standing up for Taiwan is an activist decision, not a business one.

Okay, fair point, but apologizing to China was most certainly a business decision. Had he held his ground and not apologized, like I'm sure a lot of people would prefer him to do, that would have been an activist decision.

Well, I see this a lot differently than the Daryl Morey tweet fwiw. That was a shot at China.

The U.S. accepts that Taiwan is part of China, but threatens military action every time China makes an effort to take it back? That doesn’t really make sense.

That doesn’t really make sense. Welcome to official US Foreign Policy. This is the dance we do. Our policy is "There is only one China, and Taiwan is part of China." But then we don't agree that China can violate Taiwanese sovereignty. The policy has been insane since 1979 in an effort to not anger either side.
May 26, 20214 yr Basically, the US Government and State Department haven't been able to solve this for over 40 years. But John Cena -- he's got this nailed cold.

May 26, 20214 yr Last post on this. The morons calling out...checks notes...16 time WWE champ John Cena for being a coward are just about the worst people on the planet. Same as those who called out the NBA for China. Newsflash -- the China/Taiwan relationship is one of the most delicate foreign policy conundrums in modern times. If the US were to grant full diplomatic recognition to Taiwan as an independent nation, we'd likely cause the immediate invasion of Taiwan by China. Which would force us to defend Taiwan. Which means...we would be at war with China. Now, if you're that big a supporter of self-determination, then petition your government to formally recognize Taiwan. But no administration, Republican of Democratic, has been that stupid for a reason. For now we get to have an independent Taiwan, trade with them, arm them and keep China happy because they save face. But yeah, let's go to war because orange man said China is bad... SPOILER ALERT: The Trump administration didn't change US/Taiwan policy.

Nixon met Mao in 1972 We switched our official recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979, which is when the PRC took China's seat at the UN as well. Nixon started the groundwork in 1972, but official recognition of the PRC happened in 1979.
