For Eagles to clinch a playoff berth, they’ll want these things happen Sunday | Rooting guide

Updated: Jan. 01, 2022, 6:30 a.m. | Published: Jan. 01, 2022, 6:30 a.m.

The Eagles could make the playoffs Sunday.

That sentence seemed far-fetched, especially after the team began the season with a 2-5 record. However, after focusing on the run offensive, using the combination of quarterback Jalen Hurts and running backs Miles Sanders and Jordan Howard in the run game to become the top rushing offense in the league (163.3 yards per game).

Coupled with the defense making some needed adjustments, the Eagles have won six of their last eight games and find themselves in a position to play postseason football for the first time since the 2019 season.

To make that happen, it will begin with their game Sunday afternoon against the Washington Football Team in Landover, MD. The Eagles will also need some help from a couple of teams to make it happen.

Here is a rooting guide for Sunday’s game’s that will directly impact the Eagles:

Eagles @ Washington Football Team
It goes without saying that the Eagles must win their game to clinch a playoff spot Sunday. The Eagles will play against a Washington team who will be without starting running back Antonio Gibson and punter Tress Way. The Eagles need to take business first and let the other chips fall.

Houston Texans @ San Francisco 49ers
The Eagles will have to root for the team that beat them in Week 2. One of the scenarios for the Eagles to clinch a playoff berth this week involves the 49ers. The Eagles are trying to avoid a three-way tiebreaker for the final two wild card spots, which does not favor them.

If the 49ers win, it will prevent a three-way time. Is it one of the weird quirks of the tiebreaker scenarios? Yeah, it is, but the Eagles will take it. On paper, the 49ers are the better team, but an injury to 49ers starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo means rookie Trey Lance will have to step in. The Texans are also playing better as of late, upsetting the Los Angeles Chargers last Sunday.

Minnesota Vikings @ Green Bay Packers
What looked to be a game that the Packers should win, the Vikings will be without starting quarterback Kirk Cousins after being placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Friday. The Packers winning the game benefits the Eagles in two ways. It would officially clinch a playoff spot around 11 p.m. Sunday if the Eagles and 49ers win, and it could give the Packers No. 1 seed.

Arizona Cardinals @ Dallas Cowboys
If the Cowboys lose the game, it will end their chances of clinching the top seed in the NFC and the bye week that comes along with it, paving the way for them to rest their starters against the Eagles in Week 18. Arizona is struggling as of late, losing their last three games. The Eagles have to hope that the Cardinals head down to Arlington and hand the Cowboys their third home loss of the season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Jets
If the Eagles lose to Washington, the Eagles will have to beat the Cowboys in Week 18. A Tampa Bay win, coupled with a Cowboys loss, means the Cowboys would have nothing to play for against the Eagles except for seeding.

Los Angeles Rams at Baltimore Ravens
Similar to the Buccaneers, the Rams have to continue to win. If the Rams and the Buccaneers win, Dallas will become the four-seed.

Miami Dolphins @ Tennessee Titans
Remember when the Eagles had three picks in the top-10, including the Dolphins’ selection which was at one point was second overall. Those days are long gone. The Dolphins’ seven-game win streak is why the pick has fallen down the draft board. If the Eagles want to see this pick improve, they will need the Titans to win.

Las Vegas Raiders @ Indianapolis Colts (-7.5)
Former Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list earlier in the week. It appears he will be back, but it is unknown how much his absence from practice will affect the Colts in this game. The Eagles figure to have reached the snap threshold for the Eagles to receive the Colts’ first-round pick, so they now need the Colts to fall in the standings, beginning with a loss to the Raiders.

Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints (-6.5)
The Saints’ chances of making the playoffs are on life support. Having the Panthers beating their NFC South rivals would effectively end their postseason aspirations.

Lots of variables there that make it rather hard to follow. Bottom line... The Eagles need to win this week and let's see what else happens. In an ideal world they lock it up this week. If not they have to go down to Dallas and win. That's a tall order but if they want to be a play off team and have any chance in the wildcard round then they need to step up.

That game is in Philly … not Dallas.  But still a tall order considering how well they are playing now on both offense and defense.

Oh it's in Philly? OK that slightly helps. But I hate to say it that Dallas team is good. They are good on both sides of the ball much as it pains me to say it.
