Carson Wentz melts down against Jaguars to help Eagles get a better draft pick

Philly thanks you, Carson.

The Indianapolis Colts entered Week 18 with a very simple playoff clinching scenario: beat the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Win and in.

All they had to do was beat the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The team with the worst record in the NFL.

The team that lost by 40 points last weekend.

The team that was 15.5-point home underdogs.

It didn’t happen.

The Colts failed to beat the Jaguars.

And they were officially eliminated from the AFC playoff picture when the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Baltimore Ravens.

In fairness, Jacksonville has somewhat inexplicably been a house of horrors for indy. The Colts haven’t won a road game against the Jags since 2014.

But it’s not even like the Colts got edged out in a close game. They were dominated by the team that will own the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft for the second year in a row.

The Colts’ ineptitude is the Philadelphia Eagles’ gain.

Had Indy made the playoffs, the Colts’ 2022 first-round pick owed to Philly from the Carson Wentz trade would’ve been finished somewhere between No. 19 and No. 32, pending the team’s playoff finish.

With the Colts missing the postseason, however, the pick will be no worse than No. 18 overall.

Bringing it back to Wentz, he was an absolute disaster for the Colts in Jacksonville. He completed just 58.6% of his attempts for 185 yards (6.4 average), 1 TD, 1 INT, and a 74.6 passer rating.

Wentz’s one score came in garbage time. And his passing numbers don’t show that he had a really bad fumble that was recovered by the Jags. (Not to mention another pick that was fortunately ruled incomplete.)

Watching a meltdown like that, one can only be thankful that the Eagles were able to fleece the Colts for a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 first-round pick. As a reminder, the Eagles used Indy’s third last year to move up from No. 12 to No. 10 to select DeVonta Smith.

The Eagles kindly thank Wentz and the Colts for their help.

The pick from Indy is 16 (that is locked in the draft order).

This is so typical.......obviously, Wentz gets his share of the blame.....but the Colts defense simply didn't show up......the Jags put up 26 pts and had long scoring drives, colts forced no turnovers, got only 1 sack.....the colts gave up 6 sacks and had two 4th and 1 situations with Jonathan Taylor being stuffed TWICE.

The whole colts team blew this game....they were terrible yesterday.  The jags dominated both lines of scrimmage.....But yeah, blaming one guy is shortsighted and stupid, but typical.

Yeah it’s the way of things unfortunately that the QB gets too much credit and too much blame though.

No doubt the whole team was too blame, but Wentz came up small in the big moments. 3rd quarter the game was still well in hand and Wentz went fumble, almost interception, interception to basically finish the game.

Yes, he did.......and teams look to their QB to overcome those moments.  But there was simply too much other failings by the colts that created the circumstances.

The defense just didn't show up.

The offensive line had Wentz running for his life all game.....they were terrible.  two 4th and one situations and Taylor couldn't pick it up?  That's the offensive line's fault.

But blaming the QB or praising the QB has just become the way it's done.  But Wentz played well this year. The colts have as many holes or more than the eagles do.....But judging from Irsay's comments yesterday, he may lay all the blame on Wentz.....

Colts haven't won in JAX since 2015. Why? It's not like the Jags have been powerhouses at home - excepting 2017.

Dude, you’re not winning many games when your "franchise QB” leads the offense to 11 points. 8 of which were in garbage time. They scored a whopping 3 points until the very end. Wentz didn’t get that team into the end zone until there was about 4:30 left in the game.

Also, 10 of the Jags 26 points came when Wentz turned the ball over twice on his own side of the 50 yard line.

So yes, I would say it’s more than fair to put this big old L on Wentz.
