jsdarkstar
Hey Dave. Do you trust Howie's ability to draft players or are you worried he is going to draft a QB from Liberty University with the # 15 pick?

You know that Dave Spadaro doesn't visit these boards, since it's not directly affiliated with the team? Unless you were trying to reach that guy that pretends to be Dave, just wanted to let you know. Personally, I do worry that he's going to fall in love with the "upside" of Malik Willis and use one of our firsts on him. However, it is the pre-draft season and this could be just a clever smokescreen to push other teams to move up for a QB. Don't forget 2013 when we sent a contingent to visit Geno Smith in WV and ended up taking Lane Johnson instead?

The draft is really, really difficult to "get right". Misses happen. But looking at his recent history, you have to admit that Howie has had some stellar drafts. 2018: To make our superbowl run, Howie leveraged draft capital to get Wentz as well as several vet pieces to put around him. Then after the Lombardi going down broad street, Howie had the difficult task of picking last as well as having limited draft capital. What did he do? 2 49 Philadelphia Eagles Dallas Goedert TE 4 125 Philadelphia Eagles Avonte Maddox CB 4 130 Philadelphia Eagles Josh Sweat † DE 6 206 Philadelphia Eagles Matt Pryor OT 7 233 Philadelphia Eagles Jordan Mailata Rugby 4 Starters, 2-3 with serious multiple pro bowl potential. And while Pryor was "ok", he contributed and we got our 6th back. A+++ What about last years draft? 1 10 Philadelphia Eagles DeVonta Smith WR 2 37 Philadelphia Eagles Landon Dickerson C 3 73 Philadelphia Eagles Milton Williams DT 4 123 Philadelphia Eagles Zech McPhearson CB 5 150 Philadelphia Eagles Kenneth Gainwell RB 6 189 Philadelphia Eagles Marlon Tuipulotu DT 6 191 Philadelphia Eagles Tarron Jackson DE 6* 224 Philadelphia Eagles JaCoby Stevens S 7 234 Philadelphia Eagles Patrick Johnson DE Smith is already looking like a top 10 route runner. He will only get better. Dickerson is a mauler and he and the Aussie will destroy other teams defensive lines for YEARS. Williams has serious talent ahead of him on the depth chart yet flashed in limited opportunities. Gainwell may be the most frustrating for me. He has shown he has a nose for the end zone, why his carries were limited more and more as the season wore on. It's early, but this is a solid B+ draft

I do agree that this year's class is better than some of his previous ones. Notice how we just skip from 2018 to 2021, that's how bad our 2019 and 2020 draft classes were. Doesn't absolve Howie from criticism when he gets cute with deviating from the draft board and ignoring the scouts, but we could have a worse GM.

Yes, the first round was a disaster that will go down in the annals of draft mistakes and that is a bitter pill to swallow, but there are a few clear value picks in that draft (Driscoll in the 4th, Quez in the 6th, and say what you want about Hurts but you really cannot argue he was not worth a late 2nd round draft pick) and a few others who might still step up (e.g., Davion Taylor in the 3rd and K’Von Wallace in the 4th).
