Eagles losing another key member of scouting staff

Remember when Jeff Lurie said he thought the Eagles’ front office was full of future general managers?

Turns out he might have been right. Because the Eagles have now lost both of their directors of player personnel within the span of about a week.

This time, the Giants are hiring Brandon Brown as their assistant general manager under Joe Schoen, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

This hire comes not long after the Eagles lost their other director of player personnel, Ian Cunningham, to an assistant GM job in Chicago under Ryan Poles.

Brown and Cunningham were co-directors of player personnel with Brown focusing on the Eagles’ pro scouting department and Cunningham focusing on the college scouting department. They would each do crossover work with each other.

So this is a major shakeup in the Eagles’ front office and the Eagles will have to figure out how to replace both of them, either with a similar structure or with a change.

Brown joined the Eagles in 2017 and served as the assistant director of pro scouting from 2017-18 before getting promoted to the director of pro scouting in 2019-20. He was promoted again in 2021.

Earlier this offseason, Brown interviewed with the Vikings for their general manager opening, which eventually went to Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. The Vikings also interviewed Eagles vice president of football operations Catherine Raíche for that GM job too.

The Eagles have some internal candidates to fill the voids left by Brown and Cunningham but these losses are definitely a blow with free agency and the draft approaching.

Whatever. The only way these junior executives are key members of the scouting staff is if the scouts stink and these guys correct all their mistakes and set the board properly. Otherwise they're just young guys benefitting from the work and expertise of others, and losing them means nothing until they prove themselves elsewhere.

Howie/Lurie need to start giving the title of  "assistant GM" to some of these guys, that way if they get poached/hired elsewhere (guessing that would only happen if they were offered a GM spot) we'd get that 3rd round pick (as part of the league's effort to promote hiring of minority candidates to HC and GM positions elsewhere).
