He did pursue Vermeil, at the time Vermeil still didn't want to coach and wanted to stay in the broadcast booth.

Dick wanted to coach and he wanted to come back to the Eagles, but Lurie balked at what Vermeil wanted. I don't recall the numbers, but I do recall that he wanted a piece of the franchise ownership.

Lurie was willing to make him the highest paid coach in the league. Lurie said they were in the same ball park in what Vermeil wanted but, then Vermeil said they weren't close . Lurie started to think it would take a ridiculous offer more than he already did  to get him to.leave the booth. So lurie cut off the talks.

I do wonder how things would have turned out if Vermeil was hired back in 95 instead of Rhodes. The way he turned the Rams into Super Bowl champs in 3 years makes me think he could have done the same with the Eagles.

I'm curious to know if he might have motivated Randall to go on and play the way he played in Minnesota in 1998. Would he have wanted to keep Walker for 1995? What might Calvin Williams and Fred Barnett done under Vermeil?

Of course, all of those names were aging in 1995, so maybe things go the exact same way, maybe a little better or maybe a little worse. You never know. But I wanted to see Dick back in Kelly Green... speaking of which, might we still be in Kelly Green if he'd been there? Would his presence made any difference? Probably not.

Who knows? Could he have fixed Randall? Would he draft his own QB? Maybe instead of Mamula, Vermeil drafts Warren Saap. On the flip side, would he have drafted Dawkins in 96? I just think he would have been a better long term fit better than Rhodes.

If Dick had been hired, that would have been in January of 1995. Watters was signed in March of '95. Do we even sign him if Vermeil is the coach?

No, what happened is that the negotiations between Lurie and Vermeil broke down.  Lurie was a new owner at the time, and Vermeil wanted total control of football operations.  It was even leaked the Vermeil wanted a limo service to shuttle him back and forth from his home.  Lurie wanted to be able to run his ballclub his own way.  So pretty much until Reid came on a straightened the ship, Lurie had a rep as a meddling owner to stay away from.

No way.  And I'm not so sure Vermeil would have been successful his second time around here.  He really did catch lightening in a bottle with the 99 Rams.  They were terrible to the two prior years.
