There's going to be a massive backlash when China gets blamed (rightly) for COVID-19 and they'll probably respond by invading Taiwan or something I doubt the world will stand up to China, even after it caused a pandemic to be unleashed upon the world. The WHO has proven to be in their pocket. Prominent US news organizations clearly feed the masses Chinese propaganda. Big US businesses are beholden to them. They have questionable alliances with the most prominent institutes of higher learning in our country. Logic would dictate that they have their hooks similarly into other influential countries. If the world doesn’t rise up in the Covid-19 aftermath, then we know the future is in real trouble.
May 8, 20205 yr https://www.newsweek.com/trump-twitter-instagram-joke-third-term-2024-1458686 The article cites several times Trump has joked about more than 2 terms. In one speech he joked he could go up to 5 terms.

May 8, 20205 yr Will Trump talk about cancelling the election at rallies (if he has them again)? Yes. Will he actually try to cancel the election? No. Not because he is some noble person, but because (i) he lacks the authority and (ii) doing so would require effort, and Donald doesn't do effort. If Trump loses, will he claim the election was fraudulent and should be invalidated? 100%, take it to the bank, yes. Will he stir up his base and supporters in a potentially dangerous manner saying the Democrats and Deep State stole the Presidency? Absolutely. Will he actually refuse to leave office on 1/20/21? I'd say maybe a 5% chance. More likely, he sulks away, refuses to attend Biden's inauguration, and keeps claiming he was ousted illegitimately. Remember, the great paradox of Trump -- despite the majority of his ventures ending in failure (casinos, steaks, vodka, university), his entire brand and persona is built on always "winning." He played the character on The Apprentice of a business genius that never loses, and he is so dumb that he lost himself in the character and now believes it to be reality. He is incapable of admitting fault, defeat or a loss. So he will claim the election was stolen, and he will go out as a petulant child. How far he takes it we shall see.
May 8, 20205 yr As American imperialism continues to wane, the global order will shift power toward the East.
May 8, 20205 yr I've posted stuff from Peter Zeihan before, because he's been pretty damn accurate with his analysis and predictions. Also, as a geopolitical analyst he looks at things like demographics and geography that a lot of the more commonly cited analysts ignore. A quick primer is this 34 minute Q&A from 2018. A better, more in depth, more recent one is this interview, but it's over an hour and twenty minutes long. This is one of the best podcast interviews I have ever seen. Pomp (had never heard of him before) asks intelligent questions and then shuts up and lets his guest (Zeihan) do the talking; what results is an amazing holistic view of the world. It could be right. It could be wrong. But because he lets Zeihan talk you know what the assumptions are, so you can make a judgement on how trustworthy his predictions are: And this is one of his standard presentations from February 2020; it lasts 45 minutes: TL:DW. The world we've come to know since the end of WW II is not the norm. During this time the human race saw it's highest rise in the standard of living, largely due to the international order led by the U.S. during the Cold War. As part of this order, the U.S. Navy guaranteed freedom of the seas (where 85% of goods are shipped) allowing every country in the world to import, manufacture, and export at will, leading to unparalleled prosperity. This was accompanied by a population boom that has led to unheard of levels of consumption and cheap capital. Both of these are about to end though. Once the Soviet Union imploded we (the U.S.) should have come up with a new foreign policy model, but instead American voters kicked Bush 1 (who was uniquely qualified and positioned to set a new foreign policy direction) out of office and elected four presidents in a row that wanted nothing to do with foreign policy unless it jumped up and bit them in the a**. The end result is our foreign policy has drifted on inertia, with no real direction, for the past 30 years and the U.S. has increasingly moved towards its traditional isolationism. This has been accompanied by a baby bust in much of the world from the 70s and on which means that societies will be increasingly top heavy with retirees, ending the easy availability of consumption and capital. Fortunately for the U.S. it is energy and food independent, does not rely on trade imports for a significant portion of its GDP, has the NAFTA agreements in place, is demographically in reasonable shape (thanks in large part to the millennials), and still has the world's most powerful navy. It can afford to sit out the coming period of chaos which will be followed by a neo-imperialist world order, and if necessary take what it wants; it is the 800 pound gorilla. Some of the countries that he thinks will do well in this environment are France, Japan, Turkey, and Argentina, while some of the countries that he thinks are particularly Fed are Germany and China because of their history of pissing off their neighbors and their disproportionate reliance on trade.

He also has a series of newsletters on his website talking about Covid. LINK In general he sees it drastically accelerating the process. As an example he was saying he thought China would either break apart or become a closed off Maoist dictatorship within ten years, now he thinks three years is more likely. Another is the Persian Gulf where the combination of reduced oil demand and the Saudi-Russian price war is pushing that region's slide into chaos faster than expected. BTW, he thinks the Saudis are the real problem child in the Gulf, not Iran. Another interesting one was the effect on U.S. spending and what may now be permissible there; I posted that in the State Of The Economy thread a day or two ago.
May 8, 20205 yr Almost every election now our less emotionally stable types float wacko conspiracies about the current guy cancelling the election, or refusing to leave if they lose. Doesn't matter the party. And every time they're proven emotionally unstable, yet they never change. What's ironic about this time, is that, even though the last guy did leave, he put a plot in motion to try to oust the new guy before he did. Let's hope that's a one off.

May 9, 20205 yr I think after reopening the public without a real plan in place for covid testing, contact tracing and individual quarantining, we’re going to see a second wave of the covid-19 virus. Unfortunately, it will be catastrophic in some areas. Hospital overruns, high death tolls... everything we were trying to avoid with stay at home orders and social distancing. That’s the bad part. Trumpbots will finally wake up and realize that foxnews and the right wing media is the true fake news that has been lying to them. They’ll also realize the deep state they live in such fear of is actually the uber wealthy Republican donors who have bought the party in order to receive enormous tax breaks, roll back expensive regulation and stagnate/lower worker wages to maximize their profits while hurting workers. The trumpbots will reject this new cancerous wing in the party and republicans will actually be Conservatives again.
