Eagles don’t tender Boston Scott, but return still possible

The Eagles are not tendering veteran running back and restricted free agent Boston Scott, a league source told NBC Sports Philadelphia.

But there’s still a chance Scott could return to Philadelphia in 2022.

Had the Eagles tendered Scott, even at the lowest level, he would have had a salary and matching cap hit of $2.433 million this upcoming season. So the Eagles weren’t willing to spend that much on a rotational running back.

Scott will become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, so he can test the market, but the Eagles can still bring him back, perhaps even before then. That remains a realistic possibility.

Scott, 26, has been with the Eagles since late in the 2018 season when he was signed off the Saints’ practice squad. The Saints drafted him in the sixth round that season. In 2019, Scott began the season on the Eagles’ practice squad but worked his way up to the active roster.

In the last two seasons, Scott has played in 32 games with 8 starts. In the last two seasons, he has 747 rushing yards (4.5 per attempt) with 8 touchdowns and 295 receiving yards with another score. He has also returned kicks and some punts during his time with the Eagles.

Last season, Scott barely had a role on offense early in the season but then ended up starting four games and had some big games along the way. Through all those ups and downs, Scott stayed positive. And he ended up second on the team in rushing touchdowns with seven, behind just Jalen Hurts, who had 10.

If Scott doesn’t return, the Eagles are left with Miles Sanders and Kenny Gainwell as their top returning running backs. Jordan Howard is an unrestricted free agent.

The Eagles had four restricted free agents this offseason. They tendered OL Nate Herbig at the lowest level. So far, we know they decided to not tender LB Alex Singleton or Scott. The Eagles reached a one-year deal with their other RFA Greg Ward.
