NFL News and Rumors: Eagles fielding calls on offensive linemen Andre Dillard, Nate Herbig

The Eagles have a surplus of offensive linemen, and other teams are calling to check the availability of Andre Dillard and Nate Herbig.

March 16, 2022

The Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive line depth chart is stacked with experienced talent. Teams needing upgrades in the trenches have called the front office to gauge their interest in a potential trade. Word around the league is that the Eagles have fielded calls on multiple offensive linemen, namely former first-round pick Andre Dillard and restricted free agent guard Nate Herbig.

The chatter in league circles is that the Eagles — who have a surplus of talent on the offensive line after back-to-back years of thrusting young players into action — have received inquiries from OL-needy teams. The prime targets for those teams have been Dillard and Herbig.

Dillard, the team’s swing tackle, played well in a handful of games at left tackle this past season, while Herbig has started 17 games at guard during his three years with the team. Herbig, who received the right of first refusal restricted tender on Tuesday, can play both guard spots and center. Dillard, 26, is appealing as a young left tackle for a team needing a blindside blocker.

Herbig, 23, whose restricted tender is valued at $2.43 million, can likely be had for a Day 3 draft pick or an affordable role player on a rookie contract. The return for Dillard would likely be a Day 2 pick, given his draft pedigree and position.

If retained, Herbig is expected to compete for the starting right guard job with veteran Isaac Seumalo and former fourth-round pick Jack Driscoll. Dillard would remain as the team’s swing tackle if he stayed in Philadelphia.

Eagles’ in-season extensions take heat off free agency

While several big-name players have swapped jerseys over the past few days, the Eagles’ lone contribution to the movement has been a three-year, $45 million contract with unique pass rusher Haason Reddick. That said, Reddick is coming off back-to-back double-digit sack seasons and should help the Eagles in that regard after the defense finished second-to-last in that category last year.

The Eagles have also been less busy at the start of free agency because of the business they handled last year. The team signed four starters to extensions during the regular season. Left tackle Jordan Mailata, tight end Dallas Goedert, nickel corner Avonte Maddox, and defensive end Josh Sweat all cashed in well ahead of their impending free agency. Mailata and Sweat received deals that were seen as team-friendly at the time of pen meeting paper.

Eagles’ remaining needs

While the Eagles haven’t been as active as some expected them to be in free agency, they still have three first-round picks in April. They also have five total selections in the first three rounds.

The Eagles have needs at safety, defensive end, linebacker, wide receiver, and cornerback. While they could wait to fill those holes in the draft, the NFL free agency period is still in the midway stages of its first wave. There’s still a lot of work that can be accomplished in free agency over the next month.

Don't we need to add Minchew and Cox to that list?

It is financially impossible to trade Fletcher Cox

I second Rob above: When are we going to field some calls on Cox?

I'll take less. Just get rid of him, get something.

The cap hit is murder even after june 1 and he's still a good player who can rebound if the talent around him improves.  As for Minshew, we have a running Qb playing a 17 game schedule and at ~2m I dare you to find a better one.  The economics just don't add up to trading either unless somebody is offering 2nd rd picks, which they won't.

You could make an argument they also have a need at TE. Not to mention the need at QB.

TE yep, QB probably.  Like I said before, it is an unrealistic expectation that we will be able to address all of these needs in a single offseason.  Howie needs to be smart about this and use the draft picks wisely and make the right moves in free agency.

Oh for sure bud for sure. And ultimately we have so many that they should just look at bringing in the best available players really.

No that's fair they shouldn't overpay. I mean they can't overpay anyway.

No they don't, they have Goedert as number 1 TE and Rodgers has proved we can fetch pretty much any tall guy as TE 2 and they'll be fine for 99% of the time.

Plus they’re still high on Tyree Jackson. We’ll have to see where he is at with the ACL recovery when the season opens, but he’s absolutely going to be on this roster.

Eagles still need a wide receiver. Andre Dillard and Gardner Minshew for Robert Woods

I hope they draft a TE.  Jackson did not show much during the short time he was on the field.

There’s a plethora of TE talent on day 3 in the draft. Give me Cole Turner from Nevada or Derrick Deese from San Jose St.

Jackson was apparently burning CB's & LBers in training camp when Flacco was the QB, which made the FO excited.

As soon as Hurts became the starter, Jackson disappeared.

Sounds like someone added 2 plus 2 and got 3.

I follow the Eagles pretty closely and this has never been floated. Even if there is a shred of fact there remember Flacco and Jackson were working against the backup LB's and secondary who we all know stink.

Jackson disappeared during the regular season because he played a minimal number of plays. Stoll was the backup who got most of the extra tight end work.
