Been years since I played, but I remember making Todd Pinkston and into a Hall of Famer and breaking every receiving record with him in Madden '04

The guy creates yards and first frowns for the other team. He might be a net negative on the field. I don’t understand this, at all.

Think the frowns you’re referring to are generally reserved for his own team’s fans and coaching staff, but you’re pretty on point.

I don’t actually hate the move, particularly since I’m assuming it’s relatively low money.  If he’s viewed as our 4th or 5th best DE, I think he could actually provide some value generally speaking.  Still hoping the Eagles draft a pass rusher early.

This might be the most interesting Eagles draft ever. They could go in almost any direction.

Completely agree.  Really looking forward to it.

They'll most certainly draft at least one DE, so they're basically working with two first rounders and a DE.  I'm hoping they do a good job with taking the best available player...which they can use at almost any postion.

I'm thinking they'll snag an O-Lineman as well, and then depending on whos still available, they will likely trade down for a #1 next season.

Well get ready. Of the 3 picks:

1. A good pick, but debate that there were better guys available. But overall a solid player.

2. Reach or confusing pick that is underwhelming. If not a bust, might be an "ok" player but will be a lot of other better prospects that we'll argue for years he should've taken.

3. Traded back for a 2nd and future pick (1st or 2nd). This year's 2nd at best will be a JAG. Again, fans will be upset he passed on much better prospects we'll be pissed about for years.

Then everyone will throw a fit till the middle of the season cause the picks suck and then will be mad when we trade a pick for for help mid season.

Then when a couple picks from the last 2 drafts are forced to make a few starts because of injury, some fans will defend Howie because he drafted "starters."

I would predict a bunch of pessimism, but I'm too late it seems.

I think CB is currently by far the most likely early round pick. Clear need as we basically have an aging Slay and no one else on the outside. Deep class as well.

We might not draft a DE. Top 4 will probably be gone. Different views on Karlaftis. He has the tools, but his sack numbers are worrying.

That's ok we like DE's that don't get sacks.

This is exactly what will happen and why I'm not excited whatsoever about the draft. I was shocked they actually picked Smith like I hoped they would last draft. If I'm somehow shocked in a good way 2 times in a row, then maybe things have changed.

Agree.  When I look back there are 3 drafts I think Howie did really well and rationale behind them.

  • 2013: losing season, picking high so easier to take consensus better players, selecting players for new coach and scheme.
  • 2018: Coming off Super Bowl win feeling confident and they don't have any needs, trade back out of the 1st, take a backup TE to become starter in 5 years, depth at corner and DE that grow into starters and a project rugby player in the 7th.  No worry about risks or reaches just sticking to the board.
  • 2021: losing season, picking high so easier to take consensus better players, selecting players for new coach and scheme.

So he picks well after a losing season or winning it all.  In between (which is usual) is where he is mediocre at best.

The fact we haven’t seen anything yet about his contract means I can say this for the first time and actually mean it:

(I bet it’s) vet minimum plus incentives.

Did no other team want him!?

I really, really want to avoid scenario number 2.  I do agree that it feels things could very well go similar to what you’ve stated here.  I’d probably end up being "ok” if things ended with two number 1 scenarios and one number 3 scenario, but obviously want better with any player they actually draft.
