JEFFREY LURIE REVEALS WHO THE EAGLES ALMOST DRAFTED OVER JJ ARCEGA-WHITESIDE

It’s no secret the Eagles’ draft picks have missed the mark over the last couple of seasons, most notably in the wide receiver room.

The Eagles’ decision to draft J.J. Arcega-Whiteside in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft was arguably one of the worst selections in franchise history.

Over three seasons, he has recorded just 290 yards and one touchdown despite appearing in 40 games. Although JJAW is still on the roster, he’s currently at the bottom of the depth chart, putting up embarrassingly low numbers.

Meanwhile, several other receivers who were drafted after Arcega-Whiteside are now among the NFL’s best.

Yesterday, Jeffrey Lurie spoke with the media and revealed why Philadelphia landed on JJAW in the draft.

According to Lurie, the Eagles were stuck between Parris Campbell and Arcega-Whiteside but ended up passing on Campbell due to a soft-tissue injury. The Indianapolis Colts ended up taking him just two picks later. Lurie left the decision up to Howie Roseman and clarified that he’s the least involved in football operations as he’s ever been.

Neither wideout has panned out, with Campbell recording just 360 yards receiving in three seasons. After all the speculation that Metcalf could’ve been in Philly, he wasn’t even on the Eagles’ radar.

The team could look to take a first-round wide receiver for the third consecutive season after attending the Pro Days for Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, and Christian Watson last week.

Campbell wouldn't have been any better a choice.  Career stats:

JJAW: 16/290 (18.7 avg), 1 TD

Campbell: 34/360 (11.7 avg), 2 TDs

That was just the wrong year to be looking for a WR - super weak class.  First WR didn't go off the board until Hollywood Brown at 25.

McLaurin went in the next round too so they passed on him as well.

He would’ve been a nice consolation prize.

I think though Lurie missed the point. He says he wasn't involved in the decision and he didn't influence the decision. But it was widely reported that he preferred JJAW. Making that known makes the decision for your FO even if you don't intend for it to.

Yeah, Deebo, AJ Brown, Metcalf, Diontae Johnson, McLaurin, Renfoe and Slayton all suck.

I think he meant draft rankings. I and probably a few thousand other fans were probably yelling DKs name when we were picking. So dumb.

So the lesson here is that they had absolutely NO idea what they were doing at WR  in the 2019 draft. No wonder Reagor is here too.:nonono:

Yep, this is certainly a topic that will get under the skin of pretty much every Eagle fan.

I know this is a "bash Howie" kind of board, but really wideouts bust at remarkably high rates in the NFL.  If teams knew how good DK Metcalf would be he would have gone a lot higher.  8 receivers were taken above him.

Again busting isn't the issue, it's the times where Howie reaches for a guy who most prospect rankings have way below people who are still on the board, Metcalf slid on a lot of boards but JJAW wasn't on many as WR6 to begin with and after turning down the combine his pro day was as underwhelming as the performance at the combine that caused Metcalf to slide.

It's like the Reagor pick, it's not that Reagor is a bust, it's that the consensus WR pick where we were was Jefferson, if he comes in and craters like Reagor, then Howie made the smart pick but it didn't work out,  but he made an against the grain pick and the pick everyone thought he should make had the best rookie season in history and to date has almost 5 times as many yards and over 5 times as many TD's.

When it comes to selecting WR's Howie should post a player selection poll for the fans and then use that data to determine which WR to select. LOL.

JJAW: 5%

Metcalf: 85%

Other: 10%.

Gee Howie, who should we pick?

Honestly the only 2 WRs that were on my radar that year were the 2 Browns ... Hollywood and AJ.

I know your post was in jest, but... yeah, I got a chance to quote Buddy Ryan.
