I'm not at all surprised about trading one of our #1s this year and getting something for next year. I did expected some kind of trade to happen closer to the draft. More picks are good, just choose wisely.

They still can make that "closer to the draft" trade. That's why I think this is really smart.

Does this mean the Saints probably have a handshake deal in place for Willis? Is that what started the "Willis to Detroit” rumors?

Would be great if the Saints drafted a rookie QB and inserted him as the starter week one

Howie setting up to draft a qb next year.  The "we're all-in on Hurts" talk was always nonsense.

Potentially positioning yourself for a QB next year and going all in on Hurts this year can both be true. If Hurts shows he is a franchise guy then clearly they will not draft a QB next year. They really want Hurts to be the guy because there is no guarantee they can even trade up to the top of the draft to draft a QB

At first I wasn’t quite sure I liked it but it makes a ton of sense.

Well what is he supposed to say?  That he doesn't believe in him and A) kill any confidence he and the other players have in him and B) tank any potential draft capital he can pull in?

I think this trade with the Saints positions the Eagles pretty well to trade up into top 10 if Hamilton, Stingley or Sauce fall in that 8-10 range

The best part about this...is we have another reason to root against the Saints.

There's no way that's all we're getting back

We traded a 1 for a 1, a 2 and a 3, and the 1 we got next year will likely be top 10 (or at least close to it)

that’s a massive haul

Those 2 third and three 5th rounders could be big IMO

Using the Rich Hill draft trade value chart, and with the general rule of thumb that future picks are roughly valued a round lower than current year picks, this is essentially a wash, if not a degradation of value if the Saints don't finish in the bottom 10 teams in the league. Seems like we could've held out for better value, no? Am I missing something here?

Eagles give up:

1st rd, 16 ( 305pts )

1st rd, 19 ( 278pts )

6th rd (negligible)

Total Value: 583pts

Saints give up:

1st rd, 18 ( 287pts )

3rd, 101 ( 35pts )

7th rd (neglibible)

2023, 1st rd, valued as a current year 2nd rd, ~50 ( 115pts )

2024, 2nd rd, valued as a current year 4th rd,  ~114 ( 26pts )

Total Value: 463pts (up to ~520pts if Saints finish poorly)

I wouldn’t be surprised if we trade back with 15 or 18 to recoup that 3rd depending on how the board is falling.  We might move to the mid 20s and get a 3rd back.

Eagles only gave up one first

Love this. If Hurts can’t show enough this year, it puts us in a strong position to get his replacement in a stronger NFL chance (and if the Saints bomb even gives us a chance at the top two)

If Hurts works out we are loaded for the next 2 drafts to continue to build around him.

That would make more sense then.

Not sure where I got confused.

EDIT: Looks like the OP has it wrong...

EDIT2: No he had it right after all, we gave up two firsts. So yeah, wtf?

According to multiple reports, the Eagles will be sending the 16th, 19th, and 194th picks in this year’s draft to the Saints for the 18th, 101st, and 237th picks as well as a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick.

We didn’t give up a third, we gained a third

This is the hidden value of this entire trade. Never in my life have I seen a 3rd round this good.

We got the third.
