Nobody should dislike this trade, even if you don't like the rationale behind it. The fact of the matter is it was a MASSIVE overpay by the Saints. On that alone this is a very good trade for the Eagles. Beyond that, they were never keeping three first round picks for cap purposes, and it gives them all kinds of options down the road if they want to go in a different direction than Hurts.

Value wise though, forget 18 and 19. They turned 16 into a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 7th. Way too good to pass up.

This is such a wild take. I'd love for these guys to elaborate and shine some light on how this is such a windfall for us.

With that schedule do you see them realistically picking in the 20s? They will probably at worst be around where they gave up the pick, so they'll have 2 first in a deeper QB draft, one could be higher than 15, and they get a 3rd and a 2nd.

We have more picks and our team is not that good. Our cap situation sucks. More picks is a good thing.

I mean that's simplifying it, but that's kinda what I'm looking at.

Yep, with a first if Winston goes down or sucks again could be top 7.

They swapped 19 for 18. I was confused the first time I read it, too.

We haven’t even mentioned this part as adding value.

We still get to pick just in front of the Saints with both first rounders so we can snipe them twice in revenge for Brandin Cooks.

More draft picks to use for a guy who doesn't draft well

We are stock piling picks to make sure we have enough ammo to move up and draft Arch Manning in 4 years

Yeah I'm not saying I hate the trade, I'm just trying to understand where these claims that we robbed the Saints are coming from. Because they're not rooted in anything objective from what I'm gathering. Even if you go in under the speculative assumption that Kamara gets suspended for 8 weeks, you're still not exactly looking at a lock that the Saints finish in the bottom 10. They had a top-5 defense this year, that's their strength, more so than the offense.

So a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 7th for a mid 1st round pick isn't a massive overpay......🙄

Still doesn't come out to an improvement of value using any trade chart I've seen. This is essentially a huge bet on the Saints being awful in the hopes that we get a top-5 pick next year. The pundits like Banner calling this a massive haul have me scratching my head. It's fair to call it that after seeing how the Saints finish, but right now? It's a pretty weird thing to say unless I'm overlooking something else.

I never worry about the trade value chart I never understand it .  I just figure extra high picks is a good thing.  He kept the same total number of 1st round picks and picked up an additional 2nd plus a swap of a 6th up for a 3rd.  Another way to look at it:

Part 1: move back just 2 spots in the 1st and turn a 6th into a 3rd
Part 2: turn a 1st this year into a 1st next year and a 2nd in 2024

Of course once we see what picks they become after the Saints record is an issue.  We thought the Dolphins pick would be higher this year.  I think the key for Howie is draft ammo to move up if he wants a QB next year.

Objective facts

Eagles give up a first round pick

Eagles get a first, second, third, and seventh round pick

I believe the reason teams devalue later picks is because the front office guys may not last long enough to use them, whereas picks today could save their job.

Howie signing that extension absolves him of that concern, so he can now fleece teams who are too enraptured over it

Yeah I don't think GMs worry about the draft value chart I think they are just trying to make impact on the rosters.  Howie wanted future picks for ammo for a QB or otherwise.  Saints want to get some talent on the roster now.

I'm thinking between 5 and 15. I don't see them as a playoff team, and they could be terrible. New coach and Winston? I wouldn't be confident if I was an Ain't fan.

The argument could be made that a trade like that could have possibly happened this year for picks THIS YEAR. But since they are stretched out over the next 3 drafts the haul doesnt seem as impactful NOW.

I’d rather have the 1st this year than next. A 2nd and 3rd are nice but not worth it, especially now. Why not wait and see how the board pans out on draft day? Could have multiple prospects drop down the draft board.

They were never going to pay contracts to three 1st round picks.

He wanted future picks as ammo for a QB if needed.

They will draft a QB.  We will then look stupid when that QB gets them into the playoffs.

You're always so positive.

And that would be a flawed argument for a number of reasons.

Yeah. I always will think more picks are better, for a mediocre team with cap issues. The draft is how those those add talent.

It's not that hard, they assign value to every pick based on rd and position, and then you tally up the totals and see how they shake out. Jimmy Johnson popularized the original one but newer charts have modified it based on what the modern draft related trades tended to reflect.

And part 2 in your scenario is where we lose the bulk of the value.

Could we pay them this year?

Now the Eagles need to trade in front of Seattle…

You forgot the Eagles other 1st and a 6th in your statement.

This is Haynes King as a redshirt freshman. He’s one of many potential targets in next year’s draft.
