Thus far, the Langya Henipavirus, known as "Langya,” does not appear to be as deadly or spreading as quickly as Covid. According to data from Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control (CDC), though the virus has already infected 35 people, none have become seriously ill or died. Where was the virus discovered? The virus has been identified in China’s Shandong and Henan provinces. The first mention of the new virus came last week in a study titled "A Zoonotic Henipavirus in Febrile Patients in China” published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which included the data on infections in China. Twelve different researchers, based in China, Singapore, and Australia, contributed to the article. What are the symptoms of the virus? The majority of the patients with the virus have developed a range of flu-like symptoms including including fever, fatigue, cough, headache, muscle pain, loss of appetite, headache, nausea and vomiting. Fatigue was the most common symptom, though the virus has also been linked with lower white blood cell counts in infected patients, as well as reduced liver failure and kidney function. Of the 35 people identified as having contracted the virus, nine were asymptomatic. How does the virus spread? Scientists believe that the virus is zoonotic, passed from animals to humans. Shrews tested positive for the virus at the highest rate, though dogs and goats have also tested positive for the virus at lower rates. The Tapei Times reported that the virus has not yet spread from human-to-human, though CDC officials cautioned that might change if the outbreak spreads. Researchers are still working to better identify the origins of the virus and how it spreads, though it is currently believed that there is no common exposure history between the people who have contracted the virus and that they did not infect close contacts like family members. Taiwanese CDC Deputy Director Chuang Jen-Hsiang said in a press conference on Sunday that the agency is working to establish a nucleic acid test to test for and sequence the virus, and is also working with the Chinese Council of Agriculture to attempt to identify whether other viruses are found in species native to Shandong and Henan proviences. The emergence of a new virus in the henipavirus seems to be cause for concern given what the profile of the two other henipaviruses, the Hendra virus and Nipah virus, both of which can be transmitted by animals to humans and both of which have high fatality rates. There is a Hendra vaccine for horses, but no vaccine against any of the henipaviruses for humans. The viruses are members of the Paramyxoviridae family of single-stranded RNA viruses.

August 14, 20223 yr https://www.cbsnews.com/news/amazons-ring-videos-tv-show-mgm/ Amazon is putting surveillance footage captured by its Ring cameras toward a new TV show, demonstrating the economywide reach of one of America's most powerful companies. Hollywood studio MGM, which Amazon bought this year, will use footage from Ring, which Amazon bought in 2018, to create a show in the mold of "America's Funniest Home Videos." The half-hour show, called "Ring Nation," will be hosted by actor and comedian Wanda Sykes and premier in syndication on September 26, MGM said. The show will highlight what MGM called "interesting moments from communities across the country." The studio said that audiences should expect to see the usual viral fare — marriage proposals, neighbors saving neighbors and silly animals. Ring doorbells and smart-cameras have been criticized over the years for normalizing constant surveillance, invading people's privacy and having lax security practices that have allowed camera systems to be hacked. The company partners with more than 400 police departments across the nation. Last month, Amazon revealed it had provided Ring doorbell footage to law enforcement 11 times this year without the users' permission — all in response to emergency requests, according to the company. "Heartwarming and hilarious" The show presents a branding and marketing opportunity for the Seattle-based e-commerce and retail giant as it moves deeper into the entertainment area. MGM, which Amazon purchased for $8.5 billion, said in a statement Thursday that "Ring Nation" will offer audiences "daily dose of life's unpredictable, heartwarming and hilarious viral videos" shared by people from their cameras. "Many of these have been previously shared online," Amazon spokesperson Nick Schweers said. "Others were sent directly to the team." Ring Nation secures permissions for each video from the owner and anyone identifiable in the video, or from companies that hold the rights to the clips, he said. Amazon's deal to purchase MGM was closed earlier this year, though the Federal Trade Commission has said it still retains discretion to challenge it. Big Fish Entertainment, a production company owned by MGM, will also be part of the partnership.

August 28, 20223 yr Author This is more of a WU topic but I'll drop it here since I rarely post in WU these days and I know some of you in here are interested in wine. Yesterday afternoon a neighbor of mine messaged me and asked if I wanted to join him in drinking a bordeaux from his birth year, 1990. His father bought a case of it for him when he was born. I quickly agreed and asked if he could come to my place and he said yes. I then ran out and grabbed some $50/pound sirloin cuts (Uruguay origin) and some veggies and we had ourselves a match. It was the oldest wine I've had as far as I can recall at 32 years of age. He said this was the 7th bottle from the batch and only 1 had gone bad so far. It was quite the treat.
