September 26, 20241 yr My wife and I are in Memphis having some drinks at Silky O’Sillivan’s on Beale. The dude performing mentioned he was a Cowboys fan so I gave him my best E-A-G-L-E-S-Eagles chant. The wife even joined in. "He just said, I ain’t no Eagles fan!’l and played on.

No. Downtrodden "burb" of Chicago where you see some s***? Yes. Compared to Gary, I felt safer in most big cities, even ones like Philly, DC, Chicago. But not Baltimore outside the harbor.

Well crap it was on my short list for vacation spots this year but I guess we'll check out Aurora instead. But yeah I think that's kind of the joke. Poverty is more significant than city/town size when it comes to safety. Wilmington DE is WAY worse than Philly IMO. Although taking the Broad street line up to Einstein, or driving to St Chris for rotations was always a sketchy. Strong "The Wire" vibes.

I don't think Wilmington has anything that compares to that either.

It's a wildly economically segregated "city" so even moreso than most places it depends on where you are. But you I'd put up the worst parts of Wilmington up there with the worst of Philly. It's bad. At least it was.
September 27, 20241 yr I’ve felt more uneasy at bars in small red neck towns when I didn’t laugh hard enough at a boob joke, than I’ve been when being the only white dude in a Baltimore Popeyes getting late night munchies, or getting a six pack at a bottle shop. My kids were exposed to more drugs in a hick town in Centre County PA, then they were in our neighborhood in Norfolk, VA. Ironically, the Inner Harbor was more of a sheet hole when we went last year than many places we’ve stayed.

September 27, 20241 yr We came to Memphis to see my stepson perform at the Overton Park Shell tonight. He has played there before but this is the first time as the headliner. Unfortunately that has been canceled due to rain. His girlfriend is a member of Ballet Memphis, and the wife and are spending the next hour or so watching members of the ballet rehearse. This is the most threatened I’ve felt since we got here. My joints ache watching them stretch.
