Someone dies because their insurance wouldn't cover some lifesaving treatment, and a disgruntled loved one kill them. This is just weird: Quote The words "delay” and "depose” were found on a live round and shell casing, law enforcement sources told CNN on Thursday, responding to an earlier ABC News report. Authorities also found a phone and bottle of water that may have been dropped by the gunman as he ran through the alley.
December 10, 2024Dec 10 https://www.wctv.tv/2024/12/09/floridas-social-media-bans-minors-take-effect-jan-1/ Quote Teenagers across Florida will be kicked off social media at the end of the month. A new law banning kids under 16 from having social media accounts takes effect January 1. The law allows parents to give their children and social media companies permission if they are 14 or 15 years old. As expected, the state is having to defend the new law in federal court before actually enforcing it. "The law restricts access to free speech,” NetChoice’s Associate Director of Litigation Paul Taske said. The law prevents children under the age of 16 from opening social media accounts on some platforms, focusing on criteria related to such things as algorithms and "addictive features.” Parents can allow 14 and 15 year olds to have accounts. Taske said Florida’s minor social media ban is one of the most restrictive in the country. Quote NetChoice is an association of tech companies, including Facebook’s parent company Meta and "X.” It is challenging the law. "It restricts access to social media websites by minors and adults who have to verify their ages in order to access lawful information,” Taske said. It comes as social media is becoming a larger part of many teenagers' lives these days. A Gallop poll found that American teens spend more than four hours a day on social media. "Trying to help parents navigate this very difficult terrain that we have now with raising kids,” Gov. Ron DeSantis said when he signed the bill into law on March 25. Attorney General Ashley Moody has agreed not to enforce the new law while the challenge is being played out in court. Florida State University education professor Vanessa Dennen said there does come a point where kids need to integrate social media. "We still have to deal with what happens when people are finally old enough to access it. And that’s all about learning,” Dennen said. A hearing in Federal Court over this law is scheduled for February 28. Several other states passed similar laws but those were struck down in court. Federal law doesn’t allow kids under 13 to have social media accounts.

December 13, 2024Dec 13 I saw this headline: Crystal Mangum, who accused three Duke lacrosse players of rape, now says she lied I'm thinking 2 things. 1) Well, no s***, we all knew that and 2) About time. Then I clicked on it and saw this: Quote The interview took place at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women, where Mangum is serving time for a 2013 second-degree murder conviction for stabbing her boyfriend. Wait... what? Was this well known and I either missed it or erased it from memory?

December 17, 2024Dec 17 https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/netflix-tax-law-canada-europe-1235368548/ In the early days of the streaming revolution, Netflix seemed to exemplify the Silicon Valley credo to "move fast and break things.” With its move from DVDs-by-mail to streaming in 2007, the company quickly upended all the rules of television distribution (online not over-the-air), consumption (on-demand not scheduled), and production (straight-to-series not pilots). Its global expansion — Netflix launched its service in Canada in 2010 — has proven equally disruptive. The service changed not only how the world watches TV but also, by financing local programming, from Britain’s The Crown to Spain’s Money Heist to Squid Game in Korea, often with budgets beyond the reach of national networks, what it watches as well.
