UK_EaglesFan89 Posted May 16, 2020 Posted May 16, 2020 Philadelphia Eagles 2020 offense set to have a 49ers feel? Eagles Wire Open sidebar Philadelphia Eagles 2020 offense set to have a 49ers feel? By Glenn Erby | May 14, 2020 5:16 pm ET The Philadelphia Eagles entered the offseason looking to get younger and faster on both sides of the ball. That mission has been accomplished with noted acquisitions like Darius Slay, Javon Hargrave, Will Parks, Jalen Reagor, K’Von Wallace, and several others. Eagles brass entered the offseason with an agenda on offense and Doug Pederson’s deliberate approach with retooling the coaching staff now makes sense after seeing his comments in a recent Inquirer article detailing how the Birds are looking to become the 49ers of the east in some sense. Last season the Eagles ranked 16th in passing yards, 11th in rushing yards and 12th in total touchdowns scored. Those are playoff worthy numbers, but it speaks to the Eagles too often needing luck or a big play to bounce their way down the stretch. Pederson addressed his evaluation process and the schematic changes we can look forward to in Philadelphia this coming season. "I think what we’ve done as a staff in the offseason with our scheme evaluation, making things better, the staff hires that I’ve done to bring in new thoughts and new ideas and ways to enhance our offense, I think (the offense) is going to look a little bit different,” Pederson recently said, via the Inquirer. Rich Scangarello appears to be the central figure in the retooling of the coaching staff and although Pederson calls his own plays and Press Taylor was elevated to the passing game coordinator, it’ll be the 49ers, former assistant coach making all the waves. Scangarello has worked with Shanahan and has a history with Sean McVay, so Doug Pederson appears to be banking on the offensive consultant providing the Eagles with different looks, formations, and schematic advantages that Carson Wentz can take advantage of. Shanahan’s offenses preach space, efficient use of the open field, with zone-blocking concepts in the running game, and devastating play-action passing. Scangarello we’ll most certainly incorporate some of Shanahan’s offensive concepts that allowed San Francisco to finish the 2019 season in the Super Bowl after they finished second in scoring, fourth in total yards, second in rushing and fifth in third-down efficiency. https://theeagleswire.usatoday.com/2020/05/14/philadelphia-eagles-doug-pederson-rich-scangarello-kyle-shanahan/ Interesting. They are definitely looking to try something different given the changes in coaching staff and the addition of much needed speed. Certainly got to scheme differently for those players.
Portyansky Posted May 17, 2020 Posted May 17, 2020 Our O has been flat since the SB. Yes injuries hurt us, but our offensive schemes were horrible. Honestly I think DP strengths are calling plays. But not so much creating them. When Frank left so did our O. I hope Scangarello brings some excitement to this O. 2

Give Doug a creative play book and his feel for the game allows him to call a great game. He has a real feel for when to be aggressive and when to dial certain things up. But he needs those creative minds around him to put together that play book and game plan. Hopefully that's what all these new minds can do.
DeathByEagle Posted May 17, 2020 Posted May 17, 2020 When I hear "49ers feel" I think of a solid run game that is the backbone of the offense. I dont see that happening with Doug game planning. Do I hope and pray it happens? YES. I want a balanced offense. It keeps the defense guessing. Playaction actually has a purpose and a impact. More creative plays in the passing game will be nice to have. We had it when Frank had more responsibility in 2017. But in 2017 we also had a balanced offense. Something the 49ers had last year as well. We can only hope, Doug uses some of this experience on the coaching staff and give up a lot or responsibility to them. So if we are "set to have a 49ers feel" then I am stoked. That means we are going back to a balanced game and keep the teams on their toes every snap.

I think they'll be more emphasis on the run game this year but only if the offense executes in the first half and gets a lead. That was a huge success in 2017 when we would race out to a good lead in the first and then pound the ball in the second.

That was a huge success in 2017 when we would race out to a good lead in the first and then pound the ball in the second. The first half success in 2017 was a direct reflection of Doug giving up game planning and scripting plans to Frank. Its pretty telling that in 2016, 2018, 2019 Doug had control over those areas and we were one of the worst first half teams in the league. The one year Doug gave up that responsibility to Frank we were number 1 in the league in first half scoring/yards/offense. We had a balanced offense even in the first half in 2017. Im just hoping Doug sees the light from that 2017 season and now he doesnt have the excuse that he doesnt have that experienced coaching staff to do it. I still think Doug is a great head coach. Just not a good OC. I think it was a mistake not stepping aside from the OC and just being a head coach that he thrives at. if he does what he did in 2017 with Frank, and trusts the staff around him like he trusted Frank, this team can have great success. Doug just has to step away from his ego on having to be the OC. Take the attitude of the whole 2017 team. its not about one person, its about the guy next to you.
