Posted May 13, 20223 yr I think we can assume we are going to see a lot more of a 3-4/hybrid type defense that JG toyed with it earlier in the year but got away from once he realized his personnel at key positions (coughGenardAverycoughAlexSingletoncough) sucked. I trying to figure out how current personnel fit into that scheme. I realize calling a 3-4 is a bit oversimplified (some call it a 5-2), but for purposes of this thread that's what I'm going to call it. Clearly, while they call Reddick a LB, they're not paying him $15M/year to drop into coverage. For lack of a better term, he's an DE/EDGE rusher. I'm trying to figure out who plays where in the 3-4 and what their responsibilities would be. When they play the 3-4, the top 4 DTs (Cox/Hargrave/Davis/Williams) will likely rotate at the 3 DL spots (with Davis and Hargrave being the likely NGs). Reddick would be one of the EDGEs who is going rush the QB. The ILBs will be White and Dean (or TJ). What I can't figure out is who is the EDGE that would drop into coverage? Davion Taylor seems the logical choice, because none of the current DEs have experience dropping into coverage, nor do I think we'd want them doing so. If they play White at EDGE in that defense, do they play Edwards and Dean at ILB? When they to to a 4-3, nickel or dime, where does Reddick fit in, especially given that both Cox and Williams can, if needed play DE? Again, I don't see them having paid Reddick all that $$ to drop into coverage. If they are going to play Reddick at DE in a 4-3, why did they need to bring back Barnett? The could surely have gotten away with him, BG, Sweat and Tarron Jackson, especially if they may only be in 4-3/nickel/dime for 50% of the time. Thoughts?
May 14, 20223 yr Didn’t Graham drop into coverage when we ran the 3-4 last time? Not that I want him to but it could be him.
